Yes, if you're not a felon or using it during a crime.

One of many sites you can buy it: http://bulletproofme.com/index.shtml

It is against Federal law for a convicted felon to own body armor.

Other than that, knock yourself out.

http://www.skdtac.com/ are good people.

I also hear good stuff about http://www.bulletproofme.com/

Oh yeah, that's like one of those "double secret probation" laws which our gov't has become so fond of

This is factual information.

Bulletproofme is fantastic people. I've never bought soft armor (kevlar) from them, but I've bought hard armor (metal and ceramic plates) from them, and their customer service was top notch.

One time they only had one of the item I wanted in stock (small ceramic level IV plates), so they sent me that one, and a small steel level III plate to use until they got the new one in. When the new ceramic plate came in I just sent the steel one back and they sent me the ceramic one. I basically rented a plate from them for no charge other than shipping one way.

Sure, they only have two products, neither in stock, but they have the best* prices.
(*Having the highest prices mean they are the best, right?).

You're allowed to own body armor but it can be pricey. A soft armor/level IIIA vest can run you upwards of $500. And then ceramic level IV plates can go even higher. All depends on how much you've got to spend.

If you are looking into getting any plates I would take a gander at these titanium plates.

Multi-hit capable, they make them up to .308 FMJ M80 rating.

Unlike ceramic plates, taking hits from handgun rounds won't crack them.

You don't have to worry about dropping them and they weight about 6.2lbs each.

Right now they have a sale on them for $195 per plate.

Titanium armor plates

I got one of these for free from a friend at work, top of the line vest.

You're going to need IIIA plate backers or a full IIIA vest. Plus, to mitigate spalling you'll need to wrap the plates in duct tape or something.

I'd like to see how these fair against M193.

I suspect poorly.

I have a IIIA vest, and the production plates have spall covers.

Here is a video testing the thinner 25mm plate.

It fails taking M855 in 3 rounds  but resists other multiple M855 rnds and 1 round of 300 win mag.

But, if you think about a ceramic plate, it would have taken a couple 7.62x39mm rounds and would have failed everything else they keep dumping on top of it.

Here is an Arfcom discussion about the same plates from DSG, who offers them at a price of $164 per.

i'd suggest a vest with pockets for plates.  the vest will give you protection against most handgun rounds and you can add the plates if you need rifle protection

I purchased a U.S. Palm AR-15 Defender for the wife using our $35 off coupon from Midway USA.

It protects front and back only (no wrap around) but i feel better knowing she is bullet resistant if need be.

edit: son of a bitch, there goes post 1911 :(

For preps, unless you have all of your other important items covered I would spend the money on more food, water, purification, medical supplies, etc.

Not saying it doesn't have it's place, but it has only one use. You can't eat it if you loose your job. It will loose value and never gain it and if the S never does HTF it will sit in the closet unused, maybe a little at the range.

If you've got the money though I say go for it. Don't forget a helmet either!

I've been rocking a large KDH Magnum Tac-1 in ACU with TAP Gamma+ level III+ front/rear plates, Ceradyne ESBI/ESAPI spec level 4 side plates, and the original KDH 11x14 backer for the main plates along with the ESBI side backers from my OTV, as well as the groin and low back protectors lately. All in large. I like it as it is quick to get on an off (though not as quick to get on as my OTV) and is very light and comfortable for all the protection. I wish the foam padding on the shoulders was kevlar though, that it came with the original side backers as my OTV ones are a bit of a tight fit, and that the side didnt have any soft armor gaps. However the gaps on the side are esentially nonexistant if sized and adjusted properly. If necessary you can actually use the OTV's internal DAPs for something akin to the Crye CAGE, but it is a pain to get on since there is no true attachment points. At that point though I mind as well go with the OTV though.

My OTV is in pretty good shape other than some smearing of the ink on the labels from sweat. If you need a non-concealable, quick to get on, decent priced option the original OTV has very good protection and is fairly easy to find. I would probly have stuck with it if I could have found a way to store it ready to go with all the plates an still have it lay flat. Cant really do that with all the side plates and DAPs and what not on there.

I also have a 5yr old lightly used ABA level II concealable that is really comfortable, and an ACH. Still need to pick up some level IV ESAPI spec plates or maybe some XSAPI's, and maybe some drop leg protection, allong with a semi concealable IIIA w/plate pockets.
