Told the wife we should start carrying a camera when we go kayaking. We have Perception kayaks and have been happy with them.
I do need to get a slightly longer paddle though. |
|
I should not have clicked on this thread. I've been wanting a kayak for awhile.

Hey! Great thread. I have a question for all you Kayak people -
I live in the deep south, however I am from the Pacific Northwest! I've Kayaked a few times, nothing serious. Anyway...... The large town that I am closest too, Columbus, GA is spending a HUGE amount of money to make the river going by (The Chattahoochee) into a Kayak course!!??? When I heard about this, I laughed! The river is brown and green and filled with reptiles...Seriously...It is disgusting. Having been raised with crystal clear, beautiful rivers, WITHOUT critters in them, I would never consider jumping in this river. All the southerners down here seem to think everyone would travel to come here. What say you? |

Some of the rivers here are great for paddling (no whitewater around here). Yes, it's not crystal clear water and there are carnivorous reptiles, but people paddle them (the rivers, not the reptiles). ETA: A couple weeks ago they found a dead 14-foot gator on the shore of Lake Moultrie |

Hey! Great thread. I have a question for all you Kayak people - What say you? Welcome to the south. The only truly clear water we get is in the Smokies Southeastern boaters are used to muddy, murky water. We don't have glaciers or snow melt. Some of the rivers are indeed dirty but many are cleaner than you would think, they just look bad. Though I have to admit there is nothing like making a big drop and having to roll up at the bottom only to look over at a large pile of flotsam and a bloated carcass floating 3 feet away |

I've got some great shots from the kayaks I have built going back almost 25 years. I should scan them. I've done some epic trips in mine.

Thanks. |

Bull Run and the Occoquan reservoir? No, west neck creek in the first picture, which is practically a sewer... And lake smith in the last two. I'll look those up and get around to them sometime. Still looking for good launch sites around Virginia beach/Norfolk.. |

It's in Islamorada Florida, it's what my canal turns into, if you follow it for about a quarter mile you will get to the Atlantic.. The Fishing is awesome.. That day I got stalked by small crocodile.. Mostly snapper in there.. |

Question: In croc country, I imagine a stringer of fish off the gunwale is bad news. How to you keep your catch until you're done? |

Now the springs and caves you guyshave down there in Florida are amazing! |

I've never had an issue with crocs grabbing anything, they mostly keep their distance.. I had a pretty good sized bull shark snatched my fish, caught me by surprise and about pulled me over, Spun me around and drug me a few feet before he let go, I ended up cutting them loose before he came back around again.. The place is called dove sound if your interested in fishing it, it is an amazing paddle though the trails.. |

Quoted: Can I hijack and ask for opinions on one on the cheaper side for a beginner? Thanks. Ya know...cheap is as cheap does.....but you don't have to spend too much of a fortune to get a decent beginner boat. I prefer Dagger to the rig you see me running in my pic ( Riot ) . Dagger makes a hell of a strong boat with really good engineering. The keel to deck support in the Riot leaves a bit to be desired and it's a bit thinner in the hull than a Dagger. Again, I'm running a polyethylene boat because I am in Arizona....we have this thing where our state is actually just carved out of one big piece of sharp rock....so a good polymer is kind of important. If your on bigger water or something without a lot of jagged stone the Glass or Carbon Fiber are more desirable. But..I digress...a very decent boat should run you between 800 to 1000 bucks. Than you need a good paddle.....go with fiberglass on that...aluminum gets way too heavy ( seriously ) and carbon fiber paddle spook me, they are sooo thin....LOL...doesn't seem to stop from the rocking the house...but damn they are thin!!! Then you need a good life vest...don't skimp...get a kayak specific rig....boat rigs are no good in a kayak. A good Kayak vest is about 100 to 150 dollars to start. Then you'll need a bilge pump....again.....try to get one made in the U.S. or Canada....trust me. Say 50 to 80 dollars. Like guns....it never ends....you can accessorize to beat the band. If you want to run in the rain...you'll need a good skirt.....another 150 bucks......etc...... |
|
I've only used the sit-in kayaks. The sit-on models are interesting to me, because it looks like you can mount and dismount in open water, and are not so constricted around the knees.
How are they on stability? Harder or easier to paddle than a sit-in? |

I like wood.
Port St Joe. Pygmy Osprey HP. BIGBIG pic of the topside. Here she is on top of my offroader. It's a DAMN fast boat. Not many can keep up with me. :) |
