Never thought I'd get into ebooks and such, but I did and now I'm interested in getting one of the myriad of Kindle/Fire options available at Amazon.  Any info and opinions (other than gargling balls and going Team Apple Zombie) would be appreciated!

They run a modified version of Android. You can root them and install the full google play store, but outta the box they come with amazon's own app store and a very limited selection of apps.

If you'd like to avoid all that, just get a regular Android tablet.

You can get the kindle app, or google books works just as well.

For reading books only the Paperwhite model is the way to go. It's useless for a general tablet though.

I have the paperwhite since all I want to do is read books, not surf the internet and play games.

Correct.  If you are buying a device to read books on, and not a tablet (that also happens to display books), get the paperwhite, hands down.

If you are looking for a tablet, get a kindle fire or ipad, both are good devices.

I have an Ipad and it sucks for reading when compared to a Kindle.  I have had several Kindles over the years and would recommend the Paperwhite.  It is great as a dedicated ebook reader.

Paperwhite for reading.  Wonderful device.  Kindle Fires aren't that great.  I got a Fire HDX on a whim and it totally sucks compared to my iPad 3.

Did they ever work out the light issue with the paperwhite?  Last time I was looking at it there were some complaints.

ETA:  I do a lot of reading on my iPad, but e-ink and a matte screen would nice.

This. I've had a Paperwhite for two years and love it. Gets very heavy use. I don't like Android tablets. That's what an iPad is for. I like reading on the Paperwhite much better than on my iPad. Better battery life, too, than a tablet.

I enjoy my paperwhite.  I have an android tablet an a iPhone, so my bases are covered when it comes to App mania.
