What does the hive know about the Commander?  Are they good vehicles?  Gas mileage?  I am thinking of buying a ued one and would like some opinions please.

Gas mileage is horrible (think high teens if lucky).  They were never very popular and they depreciated mightily, so they are available cheap.  Same platform as the Grand Cherokee, so they same general issues as the GC.

I drive one - it's a weak V6 model and guzzles gasoline. It's got an 18 gallon tank but that'll give me maybe 280 miles.... it's like 15mpg.

The advantage though is cargo space - it's got at least as much if not more than an H3 and it rides very smooth on long trips. It also seats 5 comfortably with internal room for luggage or 7 (2 small kids in far back) with zero internal cargo space left over.

I have a friend with a V8 model and moon roofs - much nicer. his gets slightly better mileage.

High teens not a chance.

Not a bad vehicle, just isn't popular.  As said, its based off of the GC platform so the 3rd row room wise is not that great.

You can get amazing deals on them, dealers give them away.

I get around 11-12mpg in my GC SRT-8.  So I'm not sure what a Commander 5.7l get's but it has to be a bit better.

I work for a DCJ dealer so I will try to give my unbiased opinion. The Commander is a big heavy vehicle. TONS of cargo room. There are relatively few major issues with them. Window regulators seem to be a failing component, but what domestic window regulator works...they are all made by the same company. Do NOT get a 3.5 with a commander. It is a fucking dog. The thing is gutless and gets horrible mileage. SMALL motor, BIG vehicle. The 4.7 aint bad. If you DO get one, get the Hemi. The most power and by far the best mileage. MDS allows the engine to turn off four cylinders when at cruising speeds. My old lady drives an 07 WK(Grand Cherokee) with the Hemi and it gets 20-23 on the highway. It is pretty wicked fast for a stock vehicle too. Personall, I'd go with a GC before a Commander unless you absolutely need the space. Let me know if you have anymore ?'s

It sucks like the majority of the DCJ vehicles do.

I bought my wife a limited last year. It's her daily driver and she loves it. I drive it every once in a while and it will haul ass when you get on it. The double skylights and sunroof are nice. It has power EVERYTHING and all the other little gadgets. Cargo room with the third row up is next to nothing. Fold that seat down and you can haul anything you want. It was either the Commander or a Land Rover, I think she picked the right one.

I had a 4.7 in my commander limited, with the flex fuel option. Never put any in though. Mine got mid to high teens for mileage. I really liked it. I didnt have any complaints about it. As far as third row goes, I never used it, I kept the back seat down and used that area for storage. Good luck!

ETA if the one your looking at has the hemi, it will have the MDS system which shloul help a little on the mileage as well.

I looked at a Commander in a dealer lot one day, and it seemed like it had way less cargo space than my Cherokee (though more than an H3, of course).

+1

We bought the wife a Limited last summer and have about 10k on the clock right now.  Overall......great vehicle!  Yes, the third row seating is (to say politely), quite cramped.  But the kids are constantly fighting to see who gets to ride back there....they love it!
Yeap.....the Hemi is thirsty.  We get an average of about 15mpg (combined highway and city). However, not only will it "scoot" quite nicely (especially considering it's a 5k lb. vehicle), but it tows our boat like a dream!
Plusses.......It's comfortable, it's powerful and it doesn't look like 90% of all the other SUVs out there.
Minuses.....they get "so-so" gas milage and with the glut of thirsty SUVs on the market, they're depreciating quickly.  But then.....we didn't buy it to make money.  Like our house, we bought it because we liked it and it served our needs.

p.s. A big advantage to buying one new..........lifetime drivetrain warrenty!

the commander has the regulator problems too?!?!?? WTF!  I though those fuckin bastards would have replaced that shitty plastic junk for a metal one. my GC has broken every single regulator, and now I'm coming up on the second round... the only ones that don't break are the ones that I bury a big ass chunk of 3000psi epoxy over the plastic part that retains the steel cable. I'm right now trying to resolve a dispute with jeep about getting mine fixed out of warranty. I really thought they would of learned from the GC's that have em.
