Prime Minister John Howard says he tightened gun laws after the Port Arthur massacre because he did not want Australia going down the same path as the United States.

Mr Howard, on the eve of his 10th anniversary in office, said the nation's grief over the 1996 Port Arthur massacre had been a great opportunity to tighten Australia's gun laws.

"I would call that very definitely an extraordinary outpouring of amazement and grief in this country and I knew out of that there was an opportunity to grab the moment and think about a fundamental change to gun laws in this country," he told the Nine Network.

Mr Howard said he did not want Australia to adopt the American stance on guns.

"I did not want Australia to go down the American path," he said.

"There are some things about America I admire and there are some things I don't.

"And one of the things I don't admire about America is their ... slavish love of guns. They're evil."

I love John Howard.  My affection for firearms isn't so all-consuming it makes me insult foreign leaders who choose to have their own laws differ from the USA's.  If anything, it makes the US all the more unique and special in the world.

He likes to bash the US over it's gun laws, though

What's Mr. Howards position on swords? Maybe we evil people of the US should turn in all our swords so we don't go down the path that AU has.

Yeah, on some issues he's quite solid.

But, you can be 95% right, and that other 5% can throw your entire character right into the diahrea pile.

Here, pissing on Australia's long tradition of personal firearm ownership and taking away his citizen's god-given right to self defense, he's a fucking idiot.

Also banned, yet mysteriously sword attacks are also on the rise.

I think Raven's right for the most part.  As long as he is in his country and not telling the U.S. that we have to disarm, I'd say he has been a pretty steady ally.  If I was an Australian, however, I'd hate his ass for taking the guns.

John Howard's pretty conservative, except on guns. His govt. really took Australia in a free market direction, broke the unions, made the reserve bank indipendant, cut back welfare, paid back vast sums of foreign debt, kept the budget in surplus even with tax cuts and is now talking about radical tax reform.

On guns, however, he achieved more to limit gun ownership in this country than every gun-hating liberal that ever lived. He has also given the federal police and the domestic intelligence agency unheard of powers, such as indefinite detention of terrorism suspects and other fun things.

Its hard to reconcile the two sides of his character. On the one hand, I wouldnt vote for the Labor in a pink fit. On the other, the Liberal party under Howard has freed up the economy, cut back on welfare and reduced the size of government largess, yet has taken out guns alot of other freedoms. It's an interesting situation.

The leftists in Australia hate him, and he backs the US in Iraq and Afghanistan to the hilt.  He can criticize US laws all he wants.
