Was the ivory ban a good thing? Effective? Save elephants?

How are things now?

drove prices on ivory up creating a larger demand for black market ivory and poaching.

allowing some legally traded ivory is a better solution less expensive and sought after controls populations where it needs to be

I doubt it made a difference. just like gun control it was a "feel good" law.

I am all in favor of elephants.  I like ivory also.

Seems like both of these things should be possible.

Don't ban ivory, use the demand for ivory to increase the herds of elephants.

Do the best to keep the price as low as possible, so poachers and smugglers have less incentive to kill elephants.

Possibly hire Monsanto to create GMO elephants with big tusks.

Seriously, I remember seeing a video where tons of poached ivory were burned.  Pretty stupid, that.  Putting it on the market would have reduced the price for ivory, which would have resulted in unemployment for ivory poachers.  (OK, not that simple, but it shows where the trends would be).

However, good economics and liberalthink don't go together.  So, it won't happen.

Ton of confiscated ivory crushed in New York's Times Square

More than a ton of ivory confiscated from New York and Philadelphia was crushed in Times Square on Friday to show intolerance for elephant poaching and the illegal ivory trade, federal wildlife authorities said.

Officials held it up piece by piece, then placed it on a conveyer belt that fed into an enormous mechanical crusher, where it was pulverized it into dust.

"Today’s ivory crush will serve as a stark reminder to the rest of the world that the United States will not tolerate wildlife crimes, especially against iconic and endangered animals,” said Sally Jewell, secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Depending on the source, ivory is still legal.  You can still get it fairly commonly up here from the natives at least.

But yeah, driving the black market is a stupid thing.  They crushed a ton of ivory in NYC a week or two ago.  Some were beautifully carved too.  Gift it to the smithsonian or something.

Edit:  Just saw the response above mine.  That one.

Probably had the same effect the banning of the confederate flag has.  Now everyone has to have it because it's "more valuable".
