I have his attitude about the penny.
I get pissed if they charge me the penny and do not have a cup of them on the counter. If he charges me the penny, I take the four back I got from him and throw them on the floor as leave. |

A while ago I dropped a penny as i was putting the change into my pocket at a gas station. The older guy behind me in line pointed out my dropped penny and I responded that it wasn't worth bending over for. The old guy proceded to ridicule me under his breath. He was somehow offended by my actions. I laughed.

I never really cared about pennies, too many lying around the house. After all, we pronounce prices at the nearest 0. For example, 4.99 is 5 dollars, .99 is 1 dollar and so on.

On the way out I made sure he saw me throw it in the SPCA donation can along with some other loose change I had. Ugh. I hate when they pull this shit. A penny isn't worth much, but it is MINE, not the store's. I've had waitresses try to pull similar BS on me. |

I am 36 years old and I am the 6'7" 235 Lb. guy who stops and picks up all those pennies that are on the ground.
I have always told people that I was going to send my kids to college on the pennies that I find.[:D] Just keep tossin' on the ground for me and I will put them to good use! Thanks for all the pennies! Big(PennyPickin'Up)Dozer66 |

I pick up almost every coin I see. I read something about ten years ago that made me start doing this. What I read was that if the average person were to pick up every coin they walk by on the street they will have accumulated over $18,000 in "spare change" before they die. You wouldn't throw 18 grand into the street, but that's essentially what you do by not picking up the money that other people find too worthless to keep. [:)]

I doubt it. I don't think I see $0.65 in spare change on the street in the average month. The real figure is probably well under $1000 in a lifetime. |

I read that for Bill Gates, it's not worth his time to bend down and pick up $10,000. That's just nuts. But I hear ya too, I hate when something is $5.01 and they wait for me to find a penny but If it's $4.99 and I give them $5 they move right on to the next person in line without giving me my penny. I swear I have an unlce that will retire off of others lost/left change.

If store owners don't want to give the penny, then they should mark the items to the nearest dollar, it would save alot of time instead of this "4.99", "9.95" BS.

If they have the penny cup, then sure, I'll drop it in. When they ASSUME, ie. take me for granted, then I'll demand the penny and keep it. It's the principle that it is MY CHOICE to drop the penny in the cup...not theirs!!

I hear this often, usually goes something like: My boss bills my time at $120 an hour. Or I get paid $35/hr. If it takes me 2 hours to make something, that I coulda bought for $50, it's not worth my time. The fallacy in this, is that, my boss does not pay me to fix my toilet, or tile the bathroom, or put up molding in my living room. Unless I take off time from work to do this - then the opportunity cost is an intangible thing. (Was I going to sit and watch Mayberry reruns on the couch tonight, or is this time I was going to use to read the Chronicles of Narnia to my kids?) Even Bill Gates does not get paid to take a dump. |

I know. The numbers don't seem to add up, but it's enough to make you wonder. If you live to be 78 and you walk by only 25 cents a day, that adds up to $7117.50. You have to take into account the fact that there's no way you could see absolutely every coin or bill laying in the street. Also, I suppose it depends on the economy and the area that you live in. During an economic slump or recession, people are much more likely to complain when they're shorted a penny and are more likely to watch what they drop. And think about all the distance you cover when you're driving. You're not going to stop the car and get out to pick up a dollar, much less a penny, but it's still money that you travel over. |

I save pennies for my son. He has a huge bottle he keeps them in, when it gets full, we wrap 'em up, trade them for bills, then he gets to go shopping. They add up pretty fast. I'm a single mom, I try to spoil him as much as I can, but it's tough. He's a great kid and I just wish I could give him more. So, needless to say, if I get shorted a penny by a clerk, I make sure I get it.

It was a bit unusual at first but I got used to it and actually enjoyed not having to mess with pennies. With the penny having no real spending power (penny candy is at least .05 now) we should just get rid of them and round up or down to the nearest nickle. It worked great then, why not? |

It’s the principle of it. If I’m due change, I expect every penny.
I do also pick up any coin I see and throw them into a jar when I get home. I’ve never tried to figure out how much I’ve collected over a year, but you’d be amazed at the amount of stuff I’ve bought with money from that jar. BTW, that jar is a separate jar for money found. Loose coins from purchases do NOT go in the same jar. Plus, pennies say In God We Trust on them. |

and i tend to pick up everything too. and only leave pennies if they are heads down. also, the "luck" of the coin is directly related to the number of people that see you pick up. |
