Israel: Gun Control

Gold and diamond dealers to no longer be granted weapon licenses.

The Public Security Ministry is amending weapons licensing regulations in an effort to reduce the number of gun permits issued to Israeli civilians.

The changes include eliminating gold and diamond dealers from the list of people whose occupation qualifies them for gun ownership, and giving preference to permits held by institutions rather than individuals.

According to the latest figures available to the ministry's firearms department, 173,818 permits to possess and carry guns have been issued to individuals in Israel. The vast majority of these are for handguns, although a few thousand permits are for hunting rifles, air rifles or small-bore rifles.

The number of gun permits issued has declined significantly over the years. The peak was in 1995, during the height of the state's "gun for every citizen" policy, when 330,000 Israelis were licensed to carry firearms. In the last decade alone, that number has declined by about 100,000.

The main reason for the decline was the tightening of requirements for obtaining a permit, including licensing fees and proficiency requirements, which discouraged individuals without a genuine need for a gun to continue renewing their licenses. In addition, thousands of permits issued in the 1990s were not renewed because their owners no longer complied with health requirements, or no longer met occupational or other requirements. Another contributory factor was the tightening of supervision, as well as reducing the validity period for gun permits from five years to three. Public Security Ministry officials even admitted that some blind people had gun permits

The way I read that, they are reducing the number of permits mainly because of how many guns are stolen and end up in the hands of criminals and terrorists. (as if that will reduce the number of guns criminals and terrorists get their hands on)

Their saying the majority of the guns stolen are from the IDF so teach them Krav Maga and patrol weaponless.LOL JK Why are they going to disarm the people ? I fail to understand why the liberal take, was nothing learned from the Holocaust, I just hope this isn't a model for future reference in the U.S..

And that, after pointing out that most stolen guns come from the IDF, not civilians.

I know a lot of Jewish people and out of all of them, only 1 is openly pro gun.

Most of my fellow Jews that I know are very PRO-GUN. Of course I mostly chill out with Orthodox Jews
and run across quite a few who have served with the IDF.

American Reform and Secular Jews are for the most part Hoplophobic

Isreal is, for the most part, a very liberal minded society with a strong socialist precept.

I like their attitude towards agressors and their resolve to never be victims again.... I think that is a very solid foundation for a nation. However there seems to be quite a strong leaning beyond that to very leftist and statist policy that is far removed from th libertartian or even conservative ideals of ARFCOM.

It is the age old misconception that in order to prevent victims of crime or persecution, you must first disarm and control them.

It's a shame Israel is going down this diarming and tightening route. We all know that such legislative restriction does little in the way of curbing gun crime, and in fact leaves decent law abiding people at a disadvantage.

It is what it is. There are plenty of pro-gun Jews, but they're far outnumbered by their Jewish peers.

They're big government socialists. Sooner or later, all socialist governments will attempt to disarm the populace. Read Krauthammers remarks on it, he's wrong, but it's how they think and to reach their nirvana of a "civilized society" they believe that the government must have a monopoly on force.

Ultimately, a civilized society must disarm its citizenry if it is to have a modicum of domestic tranquility of the kind enjoyed by sister democracies such as Canada and Britain.

Actually it probably will.

With fewer guns to steal, you get fewer guns!

According to figures published this year in the IDF magazine Bamahane, 137 guns were stolen from the army in 2010.

That said they are stealing them from the army too though

I am speaking of the Jewish people that I know personally (friends and neighbors), not people on a firearms forum, politicians, or media figures.

Ironically, the 1 pro gun Jew that I know is an old friend who happens to be a lobbyist for a major Jewish organization. CCWer, EBR owner and very outspoken about his support for the 2A. (I am pretty sure he lurks here too).
