I'll go you one better. I assert that the IDF and Lon Horiuchi are guilty of only one thing in their respective incidents. That is mis identification of target. The IDF thought they were shooting at an enemy vessel and Lon thought he was shooting at an armed criminal. There, now I gone and done it.

I most certainly have. I don't doubt their word at all. If someone is shooting at you on multiple passes I can't think for a moment that it was not deliberate. That however does not mean that they knew they were shooting at an American vessel that was supposed to be 100 some miles from its actual position. In the same line, Horiuchi believed he was shooting at an armed man on the move, not knowing a woman and child were in the line of fire. Both actually did hit what they were shooting at without realizing the for lack of a better term, friendlies in the way. |
