I feel that when I see someone else yawn, even on TV, or internet video, I yawn too. I don't realize it or think about it until after it happens. I've heard yawning is due to lack of oxygen. Also have heard it might have been some primitive form of communication. One article I read said para troopers would commonly yawn before exiting the air craft.

What are your thoughts or experiences?

I read that it's because of empathy. Those lacking empathy usually won't yawn when others do it in front of them. Lack of empathy is a sign of psycho.

That's a trick that I use to see if anyone is watching me in a crowd.

Yawning is contagious.  It is a subconscious trigger.  Each year I teach my psych students how to trigger yawns in others.  I tell them not to use this skill in church, at the synagogue, or any other place where respectful behavior is expected.

It is amazingly effective.

It has been established that yawning is not only contagious, but it can be contagious over video.

I was going to mention when my GSD yawns, I yawn. But thought that would make me sound even crazier

Yes, but I've noticed the more pissed off mood I'm in, the less likely I am to yawn if I see someone else yawn.

OP needs poll: did you yawn reading this thread?

Humans evolved living in social groups.

You get sick when someone else vomits, because there's a chance you ate the same food and you want to get the poison out of your system.

Yawning is similar, when one person is sleepy, everyone else should probably go to sleep too because even if you don't want to admit it, you're probably tired.

I cannot order you to yawn but I can make a suggestion.

When I was very young, doing half days for school there was a news cast where the story was about contagious yawning. The whole studio on TV was yawning lol

I thought so as well, but apparently some of the humans fail at understanding human things

I read recently that it is a sign of being a psychopath if you don't find yawning contagious.

The reason we yawn is to equalize pressure in our inner ear. So when one person yawns, the pressure in the room drops, and everyone else in the room must yawn to equalize pressure.

It's true, it was demonstrated in Omni Magazine.

I yawn often when I'm lifting, I used to yawn like crazy right before wrestling matches while warming up. I have no idea why.

I just watched an episode of "Brain Games" that covered the yawning thing. As mentioned it is an empathetic trigger but also is linked to a signalling mechanism in the brain that evolved to keep the whole tribe on a similar schedule. I have noticed that sometimes it affects me more than other times, probably mood dependent - I'm just a part time psychopath.
