yes, my understanding is that the new SXT-talons are sold only to LE by winchester but their is no law against civies having them. Winchester just preferres not to sell them to the public. Black Talons and Ranger Talons can be found at about every gunshow around here for sale.

I stumbled accross a box of .40 Black talons two days ago in my gun closet,too bad I dont have any handgun in .40[:(!]

Kind of funny how these bullets have such a cult following when there are better man stoppers out there! Keep in mind the REAL dangers you put an unwitting EMT or MD in when they have to probe the wound!
Kill em with something else, or aim for the head, its much safer! |

Black Talons were VOLUNTARILY withdrawn from civilian sales by Winchester due to bad press associated with them.
Despite all the myths and hype, they are nothing more than a decent performing hollowpoint round, and are legal anywhere any other hollowpoint is legal. Just a thought here it may not be illegal to carry them, but you can bet your life a good ambulance chasing lawyer would have a field day in court if you shot someone with them. I don't think it would take much to convince a jury who doesn't know anything about guns that you were so distorted that you had to carry those evil bullets that the manufacturer won't even sell to people anymore.

OH MY GOD HE HAS COP KILLER BULLETS EVERYONE RUN!!!!! aren't those rounds kinda old by now? I usually shoot my carry ammo every few months just to be sure.

I read a good idea the other day. Find out what ammo your local PD carries and take stock. Who can blame you for carrying what the PD does?

You probably should choose a different load. The "Black Talon" rounds were getting plugged by heavy clothing in LE shootings and failing to expand, and imagine heavy clothing is the norm in Alaska. Winchester did a re-design, the T-series Winchester Ranger SXT, which is currently only available for sales to LE, although there are no restrictions (barring state laws, like New Jersey) against ownership.
Find out what your local PD carries and use that load, if its anything decent. It would be easy to defend in court, and was probably selected with local conditions in mind. |

During this time the anti's got a propaganda campaign going claiming that the Black Talon was some sort of super evil round. The black talon used to expand into a mushroom with razor sharp talons that came from the jacket of the bullet. Congress was pushing to attempt to ban the sale of this ammo so Winchester voluntarily withdrew this ammo from non-government sales. This only caused the myth of the ammo's greatness to grow and cause people to pay ridiculous sums of money for the stuff that was still left on the market. |
