Whenever I take to prone shooting position to shoot my Ruger Mark II M77 All Weather .308, and I pull the trigger, recoil HURTS LIKE A BITCH!

One time I thought I broke my collar bone..

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Captain Obvious

buttstock is probably hitting higher on your shoulder than your used to, hitting a nerve or something, solution...shoot more! deaden it out!

Get your arm up and you won't hurt your collar bone. Your shoulder will still hurt though. Big bolt guns can be a pain, literally. One shot, one kill. More than that makes a nasty bruise.

A couple of weeks ago I put a box through my Ruger 300 win mag prone, no butt pad.  It hurt for a few days...

The shoulder isn't an issue for me.  All I know is that my elbows are sore as hell after shooting about 35 rounds prone in the Garand Clinic yesterday.  I was highly dissappointed in my scores.  Prone was my worse position for accuracy at 200 yards.  Sitting was best, followed by standing.  You couldn't actaully rest the rifle on anything.  The elbow bipod method didn't work out for me.  I'll find a log to strecth out behind, thanks.

Captain, take a few hints form Highpower shooters.  For your purposes, you can go cheap and use a USMC shooting coat ($40), and then buy a good quality USGI leather sling.  I suggest Leslie Tam for the sling, but Turner also makes a good one.  Learn to use the sling (read Jim Owen's book The Leather Sling and Shooting Positions).  A sling take a LOT of the recoil out, as well as having a sock solid and tight position.  Once the proper position and sling use is learned, prone should be a piece of cake.  I hope Cope read this, as it'll help him too.

I was able to only shoot 3 rounds from a friend's .338 win mag prone, screaming obscenities after every shot. It felt like someone getting a running start and kicking me in the shoulder with steel toed boots.

Have you tried applying some Vagisil or perhaps Monistat 7 before, druring, and possibly after shooting?  This should help with the pain...........pussy [:D]
