The last time I brought up armed pilots at work the most common answer was:

"They are basically taxi drivers. Let the marshals have the guns. And if you shot a hole in the side of the plane, it would explode!"

I guess all those pressurized WW2 bombers that were shot down were brought down by 1 piece of shrapnel from the flak. [%|]
