Not sure if anyone knows this guy:

http://ironwooddesigns.com/

I ordered a stock back in Jan 2021 & used PayPal.  2 months, i was told....

No reply to email in March, no reply to email in April, nor reply in May.  I filed a PayPal dispute & the got above link—sole owner/proprietor, dead.  I’m not sure why he wouldn’t answer before when the story says “sudden & unexpected...”

The spokesperson for the family says they can’t refund money.  PayPal policy is no item, charges refunded.  Yet the spokesman is asking for bank information so they can refund once the courts release the dead guys money.

WTF?

Sounds scammy.  If the story is real, it’s sad & condolences, but i don’t see how any sane person would give bank info for a refund that was a Payment via PayPal that the spokesman has no idea how many months the courts will take....

I’m going to do a first for me—what does the hive think?

Sorry to hear OP.

Ironwood Designs has been around for at least two decades (if not more) IIRC.  Seemed like a reputable business, although I didn't follow them very closely since Soviet-era AK laminated furniture became available shortly after he brought his products to market.
It's very possible he could have been ill or largely incapacitated for a few months leading up to his cardiac arrest, and the family ran the business as best as they could while he was in and out.

Honestly, it sounds like you are a victim of bad luck.  I suppose the best advice I can give is to be patient while the estate and business is sorted out legally.

I just googled it and it appears to be true.

RIP Matt.  I bought several stocks from him.  His work wasn't quick but it was good enough to be well worth the wait.

Good luck on getting your money back, OP.

I knew Matt, had him make some AK stocks for me. Ironwood Designs came from Ironwood Dr he lived on and started the business in his garage.

Matt did some furniture for a FAL project 10 years ago.  He was a great guy to work with  and delivered as promised.

I would expect his family to make things right.

Probate takes forever.
Seriously the Scandies sank on 12/31/19 and that non disputed will still isn't released.

Sorry OP, he made a lot of early FN FAL stuff as well.

How much are you out?

It sucks but it sucks really bad for the family.
I would not mind donating to the family or you to make you whole.

damn...

RIP Matt - I have a whole bunch of his work, FAL, AK, VEPR. stuff was never quick ship - I waited well over a year for a highly figured clara walnut stock for a G1. Most recent, a got a VEPR stock for a 7.62 x 54RR. It was a long wait and got it last year. Matt was always cordial and very nice to deal with...

I bought a stock from them back in 2003 or so to replace the thumbstock bullshit it had.
I ended up selling that Mak90 and I kick myself for it.

One cool thing is he had started refinishing furniture he sold so you just had to do the final fitting.

Fuck. This takes me back to the falfiles days. I'm not even sure that board is still around. I received a fantastic wooden FAL set from him probably 15+ years ago.  Beautiful work. I didn't think he was very old either. Very very sad.

I'm sorry what happened OP but rest assured, you were not scammed.  I saw someone else mention making you whole, I got $10 or $20 on it if anyone else wants to chip in to help OP and avoid troubling the family.  Probate is a bitch.

My M76 has his furniture on it. He made some nice stuff.

To the OP, you might be screwed. I sent a Swedish crown marked AJACK 4x90 scope to a reputable guy for repair and rebuild. He had a bunch of health problems and out of action. Some guy is handling his affairs and the ass won't send me my scope pieces back. He still sells stuff on ebay as he liquidated the shop. I have a feeling he stuck my scope on ebay and sold it.

I would take the cc refund from your card company you used with PayPal if they will . Im out 6 grand for complete kitchen appliances, paid in full with merchandise in boxes with our name adress on them .The store owner had a heart attack the shopping center placed a claim on estate and handled selling off everything I got 1300 back due to other creditors.  You can be fucked with the estates like this…….

Damn. RIP, Matt.

OP, probate is a mother fucker. In my recent experience, even the simplest probate cases take months and months to get through. It's confusing, it's long, it's stressful, and everyone wants their money NOW. With him having a business, it's probably much worse.

Matt was a good dude so I can only assume his family are good people, too.

I would verify that the owner is deceased. But I have a distribution company and while we will not accept PayPal we most often refund large credit card purchases with a check. We have a no refund policy but sometimes there is an exception but on items that are high dollar I have to pay the credit card percent on the charge and if it’s over a couple days I actually have to pay the same transaction charge for the refund. When you’re talking about a 10,000 or $20,000 item 3% adds up pretty quick, or depending on the card 2%, I’d rather just wire you back the money or mail you a check unless you wanna pay that fee, and that’s why we have a restocking fee.

ETA: Just went to the website and it looks legit that he unfortunately passed away. They seem to be trying to make an effort after this tragedy so I think you are in good hands OP

If he was a sole proprietor for the business it’s going to take time for anyone else to be able to legally touch the businesses money and issue refunds.

Sucks but it is what it is.

Ironwood has been around a long time with a solid reputation. I doubt there is any scam here.
