I had a spare router and so I plugged it into my newer router. I see both routers available to connect to. What is the net effect?

I'm assuming it's not actually a second network. Will it act as a signal booster, or a range extender? If it extends the range I was thinking I would set it up in my basement and have a router on each floor. Or will it slow my main router down?

Both routers are made by Netgear and are one generation apart.

You will want to change the settings to access point on the second router.
