Friend and fellow ARFcommer Sonoran_TJ is in Moscow for a study-abroad program right now, and his laptop is apparently having some issues with the internet.
According to him: "2 days ago it could connect to the Wi-Fi here, and now it can't. It doesn't see the host family's network, but it does see the neighbors. I know the host family internet works because my phone can connect." So the question is, why did his laptop decide not to play nice with his host family's internet, and how can he fix it? He Has both Norton and McAfee for anti-virus. (Suspects the McAfee made its way in on an update of Flash Player) Actions taken so far: 1. Reset Wi-Fi on laptop 2. Reset computer 3. Deleted connection, then manually added it 4. Host family was asked if they changed anything, but they speak zero English, so not much was learned from that. Thanks for all the help in advance. I'll be at work and won't be able to check back in until after 2200 (about 0900 in Moscow I believe). Updates on what works or doesn't will come probably tomorrow sometime. |

I was gonna say maybe the NIC in the laptop doesnt support 5 Ghz band but you said it worked at first. Reset wifi on laptop? As in turned the switch on and off? You need to disable and then re-enable the adapter to actually "reset" it. Try flushing the dns, do a release and renew on the ip address, should give him a new IP with a new DHCP lease. I would not manually preconfigure the network unless he is in a domain environment and needs special functionality (enabling specific certificates, negotiating at limited speeds etc.) I would delete anything manually created and just do it automatically. Also power cycle modem and router if he is able to. All else fails, go to device manager and update the device driver to a newer driver that you can find on the manufacture website. If its a dell, hp, lenovo etc.... do not go to the PC mfgr website to get the driver. Often they are outdated. Go to the NIC mfgr to download the driver, Atheros, Broadcomm etc. IF that does not work you can borrow my custom tool that I developed. Easier on the eyeballs my man. If you work on a computer all day I would recommend trying it before you bash it! Quoted:

Norton Sucks
MacAfee isn't much better. I'd suggest removing both (which is about impossible for Norton), and using the full version of AVG Internet Security. Short of that, if he paid for Norton and still gets regular updates, remove all other anti-VIRUS software. Don't double up on anti-virus, but you can have more than one anti-spyware/malware protection program going. Make sure Norton or windows didn't go into panic mode Make sure he didn't tell windows the wi-fi was a work network or something else odd like that, where Windows automatically set up a basic firewall to protect him. |

IP release gave an error message" Unknown what that error was yet. Quoted: Reset router?
Im guessing he tried that already, but I will confirm when I can. Quoted: Norton Sucks

Im not sure why he hasn't tried getting rid of the McAfee before, or why the anti-virus would suddenly go crazy on him. But I passed the suggestion along and we'll see what happens. |
