Do game cameras emit infrared or do they just receive the infrared put out by warm objects in order to detect motion?

More importantly, do not, I repeat, DO NOT set one up in your wife's bathroom.

Digital cameras are highly sensitive to the IR spectrum
Most animals don't seem to see in the IR range

To us, a 900 nm LED floodlight doesn't even seem to glow red like the 800 nm ones

yet the cameras sees a well lit environment

they have an array of LED's that momentarily emit IR like a flash.  The camera is sensitive to the IR reflected off the objects.  The system is triggered by a pyroelectric IR sensor.
