There was a thread awhile back on veterans joints/backs going bad prematurely.
Just saw this and thought it would illustrate a lot of the points. Video |
| I had several army docs tell me repeatedly over the course of a couple of years that I had a sprained back and prescribe me motrin. When I finally saw a civilian doc back home and he ordered an MRI it showed that I had herniated discs and degenerative disc disease. |

I know my knees are fucked...anybody else? x2 Reconstructed left ACL, bilateral extreme pes planus, and I have about 25-30 degrees of hyperextension in both knees due to stretching of the ligaments (the physical therapy doctor's jaw dropped when she saw me bend them backwards. )

I bet a good portion of that is the "PT" which is supposed to prevent things like this in the first place.
Running really long distances at a slow pace multiple times a week is absolute hell on the body and does little to improve the fitness that guys in combat actually need. |

In all seriousness though I should have joined the air force... better food and better looking women! |

I had an O-3 CO that was a long distance marathoner. He would run us 10 miles at a 6 minute pace 5 days a week. For the guys who dropped out, they ran it at 1630 that evening. He was with us almost 2 years. We killed a Batt SGM who came over from a "softer" unit. He dropped dead from a heart attack at 40 something in his office after he made the run with us. We used to pass battalions wile out running. When we did a division run, it was like walking. We also did it in boots on Fridays. Fuck I don't miss that shit.

I really wish guys like that were held just as accountable for negligence as if they let their guys walk around with safeties off and fingers on the trigger. |

In all seriousness though I should have joined the air force... better food and better looking women! The food blows, I prefer my BAS. Women? yeah, but they know they are AF princesses and most of them have a long line of ex-boyfriends divourses and kids by different Dads, I would never marry one. I think if you compared someone who did 20 in the AF and someone who did 20 in Army/Marines Infantry the high amount of long term non-combat injuries is straggering. Entire generations of young men are having to deal with life long injuries just do to the training and physical demands, never even seeing combat. |

I got shot through both my knees, and returned to duty to run 18 & 19yr-olds into the ground 6 months later, on Airborne Status. The surgery hurt me more than the bullet.
I just tore my transverse ligaments in my ankle swatting a mosquito eater this summer, and it put the brakes on anything physical for a long time. Worst jump I had was landing in a crater-like depression on McCall Army Airfield during the Q-Course, filled with cacti. Once you get over 30, it ain't fun and games anymore. I always thought I'd be pretty invincible. |
| So what does that extra 130lbs consist of. I mean dam 130lbs for a 2 day patrol when resupply is maybe 6 hours at most becuse we have complete air superiority and no fear of air intradiction from the enemy at all. I could maybe see that much weight on a LRRP mission where you are going to be in the Kush for a few weeks but dam for 2 days, that's stupid. So what is the load out for an average trooper in the Stand today by each piece lets say for that 2 day patrol anybody got a list. |

my left knee is completely shiny and new. jumped out of a hilux wearing a slightly lighter load that the vid shows and landed just so on the wrong rock. KABLOOEY! ACL, MCL, meniscus all kersplat. |

Its a mistake to think that resupply and/or medevac is always 6 hours or less away. Very often, but not always. Sometimes the weather gods don't want to play nice, and there isn't shit you can do about it but wait. |

Dirt unit for some of those guys hiking up hills and camping out for a couple weeks. Question for some of you guys running around all the time... why are you still carrying 117G's when there's the 152 now? |

I think the 117 has more range, Not sure though I was never that savvy with them. First pump was 148's and 119s. Second was mainly 152s. |

My time as an 11C in the 502nd, my ruck weighed 105lbs just the packing list and 81mm mortar components, baseplate, bipod or tube. One 81mm round. 4 MREs. Not including water or M72 LAW if you were lucky, otherwise, that damn AT-motherfracking-4 tube. And yes, we humped the 81s when supporting the Rifle Plts. |
|
I remember trying to move across the flight line at BAF when I first got to Afghanistan. I had on my full kit, my ruck, assault pack, M249 and M21. Did I mention it was July?
That's not really what did my knee in though. We spent a lot of time outside the wire most of which was mountainous. I'm sure the weight of my gear along with the nasty terrain was what caused it. Got an MRI on my right knee and need a little surgery done. On the plus side I'm on a temp profile

Surprisingly my knees are fine.
But my hips and ankles are shot from humping an aid bag on top of everything else for so long. I'm 26 and I'm sure I'll have new shiny hips by the time I'm 40. I had to get a complete new knee at 27 If I had to pack half that weight to the mailbox I would probably crumble.

Yeah I knew what you meant.
