Anybody recommend a string trimmer? Kind of heavy use but not pro level.

I paid $179 for a Husqvarna 128CD trimmer a couple of months ago and it's miles better than that $68 Wal Mart trimmer I junked that lasted about a year.

Stihl 110 or new equivalent model.

Stihl Kombi with a pro powerhead will be my next one.

Echo SRM 225 that didn't cost a fortune but has given no issues for about 4 years now.

Stihl.

I would recommend the Kombi as its nice to be able to get the attachments

My Milwaukee m18 trimmer is awesome, I think home depot has a promo going on where you get either a free blower, battery or hedge trimmer if you buy the string trimmer. Definitely worth it if you have other Milwaukee m18 tools

I don't have a lot to edge, so I went with a Ryobi Electric - runs on the same batteries as my drill and driver.

Lasts plenty long to get the whole yard done, and haven't had any issues with it.

Plus no oil to change or mix.

My 58v echo from home depot will run for a couple hours . Never going back to gas

Stihl FS55

Several companies now make models with the ability to swap out the toolhead.  Mine is a craftsman I got off Craigslist.  I got some ryobi heads for it, a reciprocating hedge trimmer,  an Edger, and a pole saw.  It changes over In 15 seconds.  It takes gas, not mix.

Saves space and there's only one cold start, after that swap the head out and it starts right up.

I'm happy with my Stihl FS 90

Shindaiwa if you have a good dealer nearby otherwise get Stihl.

Stihl. I went with one of the pro models. I don't recall the model number. I only use it 2 or 3 times a year, but some of the stalks I need to knock down are tough and hard to cut. I use a blade on it occasionally.

I finally went battery. Just fine for a fairly large yard. Batteries are interchangeable with other tools of the same brand.

Around the house doing yard work? Or heavy clearing of thick weeds and brush after shredding? Around the house I use a Stihl FS90R, but if buying today would look heavily at the M18 cordless trimmer. Heavy weed/brush trimming a Stihl FS130 at least. For heavy trimming you want handle bar controls.

As someone who has burnt out 2 trimmers in the last year on my land.... STIHL or ECHO  or don't get one. With that, my wifes black & Decker electric one has been awesome for the last 2 years.

If I didn't already have the Stihl, I'd buy the EGO 56v lithium trimmer.

Stihl is the choice of pros, and is sold at Ace Hardware.

I just bought another string trimmer.  I already had a bunch of universal attachments (blower, trimmer head, chainsaw, extension pole, hedge trimmer), so I went with the new top of the line Craftsman.  It's a 4 cycle (no more gas-oil mix!), has an electric start (no more broken pull starts), and has a dual mode head that offers both bump feed and fixed line feed.  The fixed line feed is really nice because it is economical, and much faster, easier, and more reliable than reloading a head or changing a head.  Can use multiple line diameter sizes too, so I currently have .130 in it.  When shopping, make sure you consider one with an easy feed head like this.

I decided against a battery powered trimmer because batteries are heavy, may not last very long, batteries are expensive, and sometimes they don't hold a charge.

Just retired my Husqvarna gas trimmer for an EGO 56v electric. It's great. No gas, no noise, no vibration. Plenty of battery life for my house, which includes a couple hundred feet of shoreline that gets some pretty thick weeds.

I bought a Cub cadet 4 cycle straight shaft trimmer for 170ish bucks last spring. That thing cuts like a boss. It gets moderate use and has held up very well.

Another happy EGO owner.  The trimmer model with "speed feed"

I can trim and edge over an acre and a half without swapping the battery (2.5 amp hour battery).   This includes a pool, fencelines, flower beds, two driveways, etc.

Best trimmer I have ever had.  I too will never go back to gas

It is extremely quiet, not heavy, feeds line perfectly, long runtime, plenty of power (will cut very thick stuff), variable speed with lots of control for delicate areas.

Reloading line takes seconds.

The Ego blower is just as impressive.

I have 4 ponds and 2 spillways to trim around and go through $68 weedeaters like socks.

Is the Husqvarna 128CD a heavy duty trimmer?

I keep hearing good things about them, but I"m going to have to try one before I get over my skepticism.

I'm on 5 acres with multiple outbuildings, a long ass driveway, and backed up to brushy woods on two sides that is constantly needing to be beaten back into submission, so I put power tools through their paces.

I want the Milwaukee, but hate all bump feed.  Will it take one of the universal heads?

I have been using one of the heads for years and it works and lasts longer enough for at least 2 trims of my yard before I need to replace line.

Husqvarna 128LD. With the interchangable edging tools, I was able to take down a 4 years worth of weeds and overgrowth over 1/8th acre in less than an hour.

Just attempting the same job nearly killed an electric trimmer.

Have you tried the Echo Speed Feed? It is a bump feed but the line never gets jammed like the standard heads. Changing those line inserts on non bump feed heads gets annoying IMO.

Dewalt 20v with two 5ah batteries gets it done for me and I have shit ton of trimming. Also have a few extra 20v batteries with my drills and saws and can rotate the trimmer batteries in with them in the winter to keep them in use.

How easy is it to crank and maintain in comparison to the 2 cycle ones?

I really hate mixing gas and I have too much brush for a electric model.

Straight shaft doesn't automatically mean it's better and some people prefer the ergonomics of a curved shaft (giggity). The cheaper straight shaft trimmers still use the same cable drive as curved shaft trimmers

Stay away from the Black & Deckers

The trimmer heads melt down from grass trapped inside or the string getting trapped in the same area.

We had three heads burn up the same way.

I thought we had too much for battery powered as well.   I am shocked at how far the units have come in the last year and a half or so.

I like my 2 Ryobi 's with all my accessories.
I set one up for brush and other for grass.

Quick change to hedge trimmer.
Quick change to limb cutter with 3 extensions.
Quick change to tiller.
