I got this idea from another thread.

What do you think would happen if we instituted a poll tax of $20-50?

ETA: I'm not claiming we ought to do this or anything, just hypothesizing. Guess I should have made that clear.

The Dumbocrats would offer a rebate or coupon in trade to offset the expenses.

And it would be printed in english AND spanish.

Why would you want to do that?  I don't want to spend money to vote.

Instead, I think each voter should get as many votes as their IQ.

The democrats would be beaten in a landslide.

Nope.

Now if we were to require showing proof of payment of federal income tax in order to vote, I'd be all for it.

Heinlein proposed a similar idea... welfare = no vote.

You can't suck at the teat and steer the pig... one or the other.

I've always been in favor of poll taxes, 24th Amendment be damned!

Only I would have the poll tax be a lot more - and have it replace the income tax.

Every citizen aged 25-69 would have to pay $1,500 per year for their "fair share" for being a citizen and part-owner of America. If they don't pay - they can't vote in the next federal election. For every citizen between 18-24 it'd be $500.

For citizens 70 and over, no tax anymore.

I like it, being dependent on governmet aid and voting would be a conflict of interest, as politicians could garner votes by offering services.  Not that they would ever do that!
