I am having trouble getting my wood stove to draft outside, smoke won't exit building. I installed it my basement and ran it out the window, using 6" black pipe, and up to about 3' above my ridge line. Any pipe that it on the flat is angled up toward roof, but for some reason it is not drafting. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

How far is the run over to the window?  How much vertical rise after the window.  Is the damper open untill the pipe gets hot?

I have about 4' of total run that is on the flat. I have it at about a half an inch per foot rise , book said at least a quater inch. Yes damper was open but pipe never got hot the stove did but not the pipe.

Did you make sure there were no obstructions in the pipe before you assembled it?
No shit, my dad and uncle replaced the stove pipe for the Franklin stove at the cabin and didn't remove some newspaper that had been shoved into the pipe.

Of course they had been drinking Seagrams VO, and their fix was to shoot the stove pipe with a .22 until smoke came out.

You're screwed, GW said there would be no draft.

Nothing in the pipes, checked.

I wish GW would allow just one draft.

make sure a window is cracked open to allow flow when starting the fire.  My fireplace goes out without having 1/4" crack when I start it.  Also, some houses around here have pipes up to 6' above the ridge line.  I am not sure if it is for draft, or just to get the smoke higher.  Not all of the houses around have it, just some (all from the same builder).  I also burn newspaper to start the fire, along with kindling.  It burns fast and hot and gets the draft going.

Try and preheat the chimney by burning some newspapers right in the pipe, just above the damper. I also must crack a window in the house to get the draft going. Once it starts to get hot, no problem

Thanks,  I will try and post results.

How much vertical do you have?  The chimney effect needs a certain amount of vertical to work.

It's all Bush's fault for bringing back the draft

Height improves chimney capacity -------- make it higher or change over to an 8 inch pipes for the outside chimney ........... kind of a when do you stop throwing good money after bad choice ???

Thanks the newpaper worked! I guess I didn't let it get hot enough before. There is 16' of vertical pipe. Yes I know its a bad choice, but we live in a two bedroom with a basement, and two kids, so we let the kids have the bedrooms upstairs and we got the basement. After 4yrs of no heat in the basement we bought a wood stove. We heat the upstairs with wood and have hot water heat, but with the wood stove upstairs the boiler doesn't run much.

Thanks for all the help, but someone could have said the thing was going to get real smokey when it got hot.

open a window 1/4 way and turn on a ceiling fan to create positve pressure inside(will cause smoke to go up the pipe), leave door to stove, and damper wide open until woods burning good.
