most small office printers are pretty inexpensive, it's the ink that will cost you.

Check out a couple cheap injkjets online and call your local office depot etc to price ink and check availability. Get the one with the cheapest ink.
Don't falll for the Kodak scam, theier 'cheap' ink is really hard to find locally.

Does she need an 'all in one' with a copier and printer? a photo printe?  just documents??

If just documents then get one with only 4 colors as thats less carts to replace when it runs out. If she wants photos too you are looking at a 6 color printer, be sure to stock up on the 'light magenta' and 'light cyan' as they run out quick.

Canon printers are fast, i like them.

Get a cheap one as it will probably clog up if you don't use it a lot, then you can just throw it away.. sad I know.

I'm also shopping for a new photo printer but probably more than you need, I"m going with a Canon pixma 9000 from craigslist, lots of folks got them free with a camera purchase and are unloading them for cheap.

be sure to pick up some paper too.
I use the cheapest office depot brand inkjet paper in the purple wrapper, this is a 'plain' type paper for documents.
Maybe pick up some cheap office depot brand glossy paper too for some photos.

If its a heavy use printer and does not need to do color get a laser printer.

If you need color from time to time and its not going to used a lot just get a Inkjet type printer. They are basically disposable these days. Buy something for $50 and use it till it dies and then get another.

what features you want?  scanner? copier? speed? high quality? network connectivity (even wireless network connectivitiy)? ability to plug in camera memory sticks and print directly?  find what features you want, then shop by those.  also, ink will be expesnive no matter which printer you buy.  so expensive that it may be cheaper to just buy another printer than buy new ink....
