I've had it since I was a little kid. I never knew it was a real thing until I did some research regarding the "creepy stories" thread.

Exploding Head Syndrome

It really sucks. I usually have an 'attack' once a month or every few weeks, and then I'll get them every night for a few nights, then back to normal sleep.

Usually it is an extremely "loud" bang, sometimes it seems like something is screaming at me suddenly. It ends as suddenly as it begins, and there is no pain. Just like an asshole way of ruining my transition into sleep.

Does anyone else have this?

I get it about once every couple months or so.  Same sort of sounds.  Either a loud bang, or a scream.

It's every few years for me.

Yeah, I get this occasionally.

Didn't even know it was a "syndrome".

While drifting to sleep sometimes I'll hear a loud (phantom) "bang" shortly after I go under.  I usually go right back to sleep afterwards.  Not a big deal for me.

ETA: I occasionally (while conscious) will get what feels like a very painful electric jolt in one of my shoulders, leaving the muscle all tense.  That's much more bothersome because it actually hurts.

The doctor says I have EHS, but that doesn't explain the bullet holes.

I don't think I've heard the loud noise, but I have jumped and awakened myself many times just as I was falling asleep.  Usually happens when I'm very tired.  Too tired to fall asleep.

Holy shit, its really a thing?

I have that along with "full body jerk", like once a week.

Yep, I get the 'jerk' too but it is much less frequent. Also, I get the sensation that the floor drops out from under me (same timing as the 'bang' - right before sleep) and the drop wakes me up. Think of the scene in Inception where they tilt the chair backward to jar him awake.

I have had this before...so weird. It's been a long time, but it happened several nights in a row a few years ago. Just as I was drifting off to sleep, I would hear loud bangs that sent me flying out of bed. No one else heard them, but me. It kept thinking someone was kicking my front door or trying to break in. My mother also has experienced this.

I've had this "syndrome" since I was a kid. I read that its just your muscles relaxing before you drift off to sleep. I've had it all, the phantom "bang", the falling and then jerk awake, electric jolt.

I figured it out before i read the article. Just the body winding down/relaxing.

It's yer brain winding down when you start to fall asleep.  Voices, noises, buzzing wires, yeah.....big deal.  Do you hear your name being called?

[#17]

I can almost fall asleep on command, like a cat. maybe these "jolts" is the backlash for those of use who have so much control on sleeping that we actually start subcontiously putting stuff to sleep that should still be working...Heart,lungs,etc...

Then...POW, a natural defense defibrillator to the body wakes us back up.

I know...I'm nutz

I've had this happen to me, I just always assumed I was having a bad dream and that I was just having a weird reaction to whatever happened.  I have never been able to remember my dreams.

Good to know I'm not alone, I kind of thought it might be my crazy alter-personality trying to get out.  Good to know that whacked out fucker is still locked up.

I get it too.  I get two distinct sounds.  Sometimes it like two metal pans clanging hard together and other times it's like a gun shot.

I almost always jolt up and ask my wife if she heard it.  How could she not hear that??

I've had a couple, the noise was a brief but very loud buzz like a fire alarm or a dive alarm for a submarine.  They were accompanied visually by what looked like explosions happening in a heavy gray fog with tendrils of gray shooting all over.  They happened years ago during college while I was under a lot of stress and hadn't been sleeping enough.  For a long time I thought I had a brief epileptic seizure, then I read about them here.

I used to have frequent physical sleep starts (falling or jumping sensation).  They are infrequent now, and usually occur if I am both stressed out and tired.

It's possible that I might have experienced that a couple of times.

When it has happened, just as I'm going to sleep, it's like someone turned up the gain on my ears to the point that the slightest noise (like the sound of the

ceiling fan running on low) becomes so loud it wakes me up.     It happens once or twice and then stops.

Same here.   Not too often,  usually when I am almost fully asleep, I will here what sounds like someone shot a 12ga outside my window.     Then I lay awake wondering if I heard it or dreamed it

When it is an explosion, the closest thing I could compare it to are those fireworks that exist just to make noise - you know, the ones that just have a small white flash but a deafening boom you can feel in your chest. Only it sounds like it was detonated a few feet away from me.

I get it sometimes, too.  Always happens just as I fall asleep.  Usually just a "pop," but once was a LOUD bang that made me jump out of the bed!  Always wondered if other people experienced this.  Glad to know I'm not the only one!  I figured it was falling into dream state, and being awakened by that, all within a millisecond or so, hense the "pop" sound.

I used to get the full body jerk aka hypnic jerk all the time.  It stopped, but now I get this.  I did not know there was a name for it. I always figured that it was an auditory hypnic jerk.  The first time it happened it freaked me the fuck out.

Any of you guys hear anything other than a loud bang?

Sometimes I'll hear what sounds like VERY loud rolling thunder or a plane about to land on my house.  Usually within the first hour of sleep.  I've woken up from this with my heart beating so fast I thought it was gonna pop and feeling like the apocalypse had just occurred.  After a few minutes, I'm back to sleep.  Freakin' weird.

One evening before a pig hunt my buddy stayed up getting some gear sorted while I went to sleep. I guess I had just dozed
off when I heard a loud crash like a giant window being shattered. In my mind I thought somebody was attacking the upper house where some other
friends were sleeping.

When I heard the crash I jumped up and grabbed an AR that was leaning against the wall and slapped a mag in. After I just stood there trying to figure why my buddy who was calmly sitting about ten feet away wrapping something in gaffers tape was not locking and loading. He just looks at me and says "Well, I guess you are ready to go."
I am sure he was wondering WTF is this guy doing?

After he explained that there was no breaking glass I just layed back down and went right back asleep. Not a good sensation, the only time that has
ever happened.

Mine is like an electrical arc. White flash, full body jolt, not so much of an explosion but a bang.

Since were on odd sleep issues,  anyone ever wake up before their body does, and it is kinda like your completely paralyzed for a minute or so?     This happens to me more often.    This can also show up when I am going to sleep..    At first I will feel like I am rocking or tilting back and forth really fast, (kinda like drunk spinneys but faster and more deliberate)  and then I cannot move unless I concentrate on it.
