Currently Iran can not provide oil to the U.S. due to U.S. sanctions. Iran says if U.S. lifts sanction, it would provide 20 million barrels of oil. Today's oil price was $66.15. That comes out to over $1.3 billion... almost triple what Kuwait offered

Iran offers US Katrina oil relief

Iran has offered to send 20m barrels of crude oil to the US to help with the consequences of Hurricane Katrina.

The two countries have had no diplomatic relations for decades, but America did send help to Iran when a severe earthquake hit Bam in 2003.

Speaking on state-run radio, Iran's envoy to OPEC said his country was ready to send up to five shiploads of crude oil to the US.

But he said this could only happen if US sanctions were lifted first.

The envoy, Hosein Kazempur-Arbedili, did not clarify if he meant lifted temporarily for this aid shipment, or permanently.

The idea behind this offer is that Hurricane Katrina has badly disrupted production in the Gulf of Mexico, which supplies up to a quarter of America's oil.

In practice, US sanctions may well mean Iran cannot carry through on its offer, but it is a rare gesture of good will.

When an earthquake devastated the Iranian city of Bam nearly two years ago a team of American doctors with medical aid was sent.

Though Iran was thankful for the humanitarian help it never led to a breakthrough in relations.

I guess in a sense... but unless the we lift the sanctions, due to U.S. law, we can't accept their oil.

Sounds like N. Korea to me.  You do this and we'll give you that.  What do you want to bet we lift sanctions and they have trouble sending it.  OR if we do lift them temporarily, we'll look like the bad guys if we put them back in place.  If we don't accept it, we're being stubborn.

I don't think we'll win this one no matter what we do, and the Iranians know it.

How about "Send us the oil or we take it?"

I dont understand why people think there is a lack of oil in the US. There is no such thing; we only have a short-term lack of refining capability. We could have tanker after tanker floating right on our coasts and it would have no influence whatsoever on the price of gas.

What we have is a refining problem; which CANNOT be fixed by bringing in more oil. Yeesh !

Absolutely not.

The fact that they even make such an offer tells us that the sanctions are having their intended effect.

Sorry mullahs. Nice try.

Either way, they're going to make us look bad.  I know we don't need oil.  We need refined oil i.e. gasoline.  The US will have to respond like "Thank you for your offer but we have all we need on the way right now.  If that changes, we'll call."  I know it's BS but what do you do?

Edit:  It will make them look a little bad putting conditions on it, but they'll probably spin that too.

And leave a carrier group in the region for 'safe keeping'.

This reminded me of a flier I saw around town in the 70's during the Iran hostage crisis....a picture of Mickey mouse giving the middle finger with a caption that said, "Hey, Iran"

Just once, I would like to see our own country be the agressor...quitely if politically neccesary....but damn what I would give to vaporize that miserable fucking country.

Amen.

The libs say there is very little oil in ANWAR, but why would the oil companies want to spend all that money on infrastructure up there for just a little oil.  Me thinks there is alot!

extortion? extortion relies on a threat, and they have no threat leverage.  it's a simple trade that they're offering.  i'm not sure it'd be a good idea to accept, but it's not even remotely extortion.

deft political move, and maybe the best way to develop a new relationship.

don't forget, a lot of people said perestroika was a ruse.
