Yeah, I think just about everyone is getting screwed by IE 7.5 in one way or another.

You should configure your updates differently.

I never allow automatic installation, always check what they want to install.

Check your profile folder for 'bookmarks.html'.  Your bookmarks may still be there, but something in Firefox may not be able to open them.  IE stores its bookmarks in a different way and should not step on Firefox.  They co-exist happily on my system.  There may be another problem with your Firefox, or something may have screwed up your file permissions.  I have never heard of this happening before, so it's certainly not common.  Mobs would have burned down Microsoft's HQ by now.

Even if you don't allow auto-updating, it's still difficult to tell what effect a particular update is going to have on your system.

Chapper, yeah, it sucks big time but auto-updating is the "way of the future".  Like I said, even if you approve said update, there's no telling what's going on "behind the scenes".

"Plugged-in" environments are not going away any time soon.

I'm considering Mac OS X for my next purchase.  I'll get some of this over in that environment too but a lot less hassel from other aspects of computing.  Your mileage will vary.

Bill Gates has been doing that for years.  He put a special delay loop in Microsoft Excel so that it would run slower than normal if you tried to run it under OS/2 ten years ago, to force you to use Windows.  He does this crap all the time.  He and Microsoft are evil.

Since IE 7 came out, we've gotten a lot more support calls from people that are having trouble running 6.  It's funny how the same thing happened to 5.5 when 6 came out.  Maybe Microsoft doesn't intentionally ruin their older products to force you to upgrade, but it certainly appears that way.z

Did you read the EULA when you installed Winblows, as far as Microsoft is concerned, you are just leasing it.

And no one can tell me that wasn't intentional.

This is how Microsoft clings to its market share; not through quality programming, but through subterfuge and occasional theft of ideas. The crap that is tolerated from that company never ceases to amaze me. I use PCs at work, and I hate Windows/IE more and more every day.

They stole the GUI concept from Xerox but it's a good thing because Xerox wasn't going to do shit with it.  Old Xerox was great at inventing things but absolutely horrible at implementing or marketing them.  Xerox created the mouse too, they did jackshit with it.

Local radio show tech guy said everyone might as well take the leap to Linux now rather than later. MS Vista has a lot of security CRAP added into it that will "read" the machine that it is installed on. This means if you have to replace a component in your PC, i.e. CPU, motherboard, hard drive, the MS Vista software thinks it is installed on another PC. This is forbidden by the license agreement without purchasing ANOTHER copy of the software. So, Linux is free in some versions, (RedHat cost money), it is MORE secure than Windoze but requires a little more user input to install. You make the call.

Try this:

Exit Firefox

Click on Start, then Run

Enter this text:  firefox.exe -ProfileManager

Click OK

It should open the profile manager and let you choose which one to use.  If there is only one profile there is might not work for you.

The local radio show tech guy is full of shit...

In Vista you can replace most components in a computer with no activation problems if it is a new motherboard you might have to call to re-activate. You can also install a retail copy of Vista on any computer you like as long as it is uninstalled for the old computer.

The below is from the Vista license agreement:

You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices.

The whole Vista license agreement:

download.microsoft.com/documents/useterms/Windows%20Vista_Home%20Premium_English_d16c019b-fa71-4fc9-a51d-a0621bddb153.pdf

Well, I guess we should all be so grateful that MS permits us to switch to a new motherboard
What the hell right does MS have to tell me how I can use the software I purchase within my own home for non-commercial purposes? The whole concept of such a license is invalid.  I should be able to install the OS on as many machines as I like, without  MS's knowledge or permission.  The license is crap.

People, freedom awaits you.  Switch to Linux.  Yes, it's not as easy to install, but then nothing good comes easy.

I'm writing this post on a WINXP laptop, but my browser (Mozilla) is actually running on my Linux box.  I only use the laptop as a "terminal" to access the Linux box, so I never use IE for anything.  The only reason I actually even own a MS product is because I'm forced to use Windows-based tax software every year. If Turbotax ever offers a Linux port I'll dump WINXP in a second.

All MS products suck when it comes to user control over configuration, and Vista will only be worse in this regard. MS has the concept of "save the current configuration when I shut down".  This is crap, and causes people all kinds of grief.  Linux configuration never changes UNLESS YOU CHANGE IT.  It does not automatically save the config upon shutdown.

I've been using a 'bookmark manager' application called JetLinks for about 2 years now.  Basically JetLinks keeps your bookmarks in another file (formatted so JetLinks can read them).  You can 'import' from existing IE, Opera, Netscape, HTML file, or Text File.

Now JL can't deal with Firefox, but I bet you can find a free bookmark manager that can deal with Firefox, IE, etc. etc.

This has made my life a LOT easier since I can keep my bookmarks synched between my home and work computers.

Just a recommendation

Gee why didn't my computer come with it if it's so much "better"?  Note-I'm not a fan of one company or the other, but ms stuff works well, is compatible with everything around me, and is low/no maintenance.

Do we really have to explain to you why your computer, running Microsoft Windows, came with Microsoft Internet Explorer, and not another third-party browser?

As to IE7: all MS did was take the ideas that have made other browsers popular and give it a fagged up interface.  SOP for them.

The only problem that I can see is that fireFox is no longer the default browser, and to get it to change back to IE, I'm pretty sure you have to click ok.

Open Firefox, click on tools, then options, then main.  Clcik the button that says to check if it's the default browser.  It will ask of you want to make Firefox your default browser.  Click yes.
