N.C. officer killed; suspect arrested

19-year-old man in custody after fatal traffic stop

By Steve Jones

The Sun News

The man arrested and charged in the shooting death of a Boiling Spring Lakes, N.C., auxiliary police officer is the son of a man who is serving a life sentence for killing a retired police officer.

Nineteen-year-old Darrell Wayne Maness of Burlington, N.C., has been charged in the death of Officer Mitch Prince and is being held without bail in the Brunswick County, N.C., jail.

His father, Darrell E. Maness, is serving a life sentence in Caledonia Correctional Institution in Tillery, N.C., for killing a retired police officer who was working as a security guard at an Eckerd drugstore in 1986.

"I don't know that the son really knew his dad, [with] the boy being 19," said Chief Richard White of the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department. "The father has been in prison since 1987."

Prince, 36, was shot three times and killed during a traffic stop early Tuesday in eastern Brunswick County. He was found dead at the scene about 1:20 a.m. by a backup officer summoned by the Brunswick 911 Center, which had been notified of the traffic stop.

Officials said Prince was shot with his own gun.

Maness had been wanted for a probation violation in Alamance County.

Prince reportedly stopped Maness for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, White said.

Prince was married and had an 18-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son, White said. He said Prince was filling the slot of an officer who retired in December and was working full time although not a permanent member of the police force.

White said Prince previously had worked for five years for the Yaupon Beach, N.C., Police Department.

"He was more of an 'I'm here to help you' type of officer than he was an enforcement type," White said.

Prince is the first Boiling Spring Lakes officer to die in the line of duty, White said.

Prince notified Brunswick 911 at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday of the routine traffic stop at N.C. 133, also known as River Road, and N.C. 87, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office. A news release said the 911 center told Prince that the car was owned by a man thought to have fled probation in Alamance County.

White said Maness was on probation for the sale and delivery of narcotics. He failed a drug test and fled Alamance County to avoid being sent to jail, White said.

A Southport police officer found Prince at the scene at 1:19 a.m., according to the Sheriff's Office news release, and an alert for the vehicle was broadcast. At 1:29 a.m., an Oak Island, N.C., police officer spotted the vehicle at the Port Motel in Long Beach, N.C.

Police teams were dispatched to the area, and the suspect was found hiding under a mobile home, the release said.

Besides working as an auxiliary police officer, White said Prince, a Brunswick County native, was a caterer and cooked at several restaurants.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Highest Praise Worship Center in Shallotte, N.C., White said.

Pentagon Police Officer Dies from Line of Duty Injuries

Courtesy of The U.S. Department of Defense

Washington, D.C. -- Pentagon police officer James M. Feltis, III died at 12:40 p.m. today from complications resulting from injuries sustained in the line of duty.

On Jan. 11, 2005 at approximately 8:27 a.m. a stolen vehicle that was attempting to elude a marked Alexandria police cruiser struck Feltis. The operator of the stolen vehicle turned onto the pentagon reservation and traveled the wrong way on South Rotary Rd., a one-way street, at a high rate of speed. Upon seeing the vehicle approach his location, Feltis attempted to initiate a traffic stop and was struck head on as the vehicle continued traveling at a high rate of speed the wrong way up the Route 27 on-ramp to the pentagon reservation. The 41 year-old officer, a 12-year veteran of the Pentagon Police Department, was flown to INOVA Fairfax Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. He never regained consciousness.

On Feb. 8, 2005, during a bedside ceremony attended by his wife, Feltis was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal of Valor for life threatening injuries sustained during the performance of his official protection duties.

On Feb. 10, 2005 the operator of vehicle, Ossie Larode, 22, no known address, was indicted by a federal grand jury in a five count indictment charging, among other things, carjacking and attempted murder of Feltis. Larode is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals in Alexandria, Va.

Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ortiz
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
California
End of Watch: Friday, June 24, 2005

Deputy Ortiz was shot and killed after knocking on a door during an investigation.

Deputy Ortiz had gone to an apartment complex in the city of Hawaiian Gardens to question a woman about a shooting that had taken place the previous day. As he spoke to the woman at the door of the apartment, the suspect in the previous day's shooting appeared and shot him in the head. The man then fled into an apartment three doors away. Deputies found him hiding in a bathtub three hours later.

The suspect, who was on parole and had prior arrests or convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, burglary, as well as for gun and drug crimes, was charged with first degree murder and faces the death penalty.

Six months prior to this incident, Deputy Ortiz's brother-in-law, Corrections Officer Manuel A. Gonzalez, of the California Department of Corrections, was stabbed to death by a gang member inmate at California Institution for Men in Chino.

Deputy Ortiz had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 15 years and was assigned to the Anti-Gang Unit. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and mother.

Sgt. William McEntee, 43, who had been with the Kirkwood Police Department since 1981, died of gunshot wounds late Tuesday night at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, said Kirkwood Police Chief Jack Plummer. McEntee was responding to a fireworks disturbance about 7:30 p.m. when the shooting took place. Plummer said a man identified as Kevin Johnson, 19, approached McEntee, made some "bizarre statements" and shot him several times. "He was responding to a call that had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting," he said. "Our man was ambushed."

McEntee was a married father of three children ages 7, 10 and 13, police said. The 6-foot-4-inch officer coached his children's little league teams.

Deputy Blount and Deputy Joseph Kievernagel were killed in a helicopter accident while on aerial patrol. During their flight Deputy Kievernagel, who was the pilot, called in a mayday as the result of a mechanical failure and on-board fire.

Deputy Kievernagel made an emergency landing on a hilly area near Lake Natoma. When the Eurcopter-EC120 landed the tail end broke off, causing the fuselage of the helicopter to roll down a hill. It is believed that Deputy Kievernagel and Deputy Blount survived the initial landing with minor injuries, but were killed as the result of the helicopter rolling down the hill. A third deputy, who was first on the list to become a co-pilot, was also in the helicopter and received life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Blount had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for 7 years. He is survived by his parents, brother, and sister.
