What could cause the Back button not to work on IE?

never heard of such a problem.  does it do that on all web pages.  or just some.  

have you installed your windows updates??

Yes it does it on every web page. I have all the windows updates. Funny thing is that when I use Mozilla I have no problem.

u solved your own problem.  

have you you installed and run adaware se, spybot search and destroy, xblock scroll down and click download.  and see what they find.  they might just help some

Your back button linkage is broken.  You didn't keep your linkage joints greased, so the bearings wore out.  You need to get a new monitor, but make sure to get one with the Industrial Grade linkage joints.
