Thoughts?  Suggestions? Opinions?

I'm thinking of shooting IDPA for the first time this weekend, and am wondering what to expect.  What do I need to take with me?

A pistol? [:D]

Norman:

Go along and have fun.  Take your pistol, holster, light jacket in case they want you to draw from concealed, at least 100 rounds, a hat, some water, and a calm heart.

I would suggest that you practice reloading with magazine retention, tactical reloading (letting the empty drop), TAP-RACK-BANG fail-to-fire drills, plenty of dry-firing, drawing from your holster SMOOTHLY, and clearing drills also.  All of the above will help and I have probably forgotten a few things as well.

Enjoy.

Eye and Ear protection.

IDPA uses a vest or a jacket to cover weapon and mags.

You need a hoslter that covers the trigger, a double mag pouch or a couple of singles. Gear must be worn behind the center line of you hip.

Bring at least 3 mags.

Bring a couple hundred rounds

DONT SWEAT the little things reload when you want to.

Just have fun and be safe. Worry about the silly rules in another couple of matches.

If you are new to this kind of action shooting remember this when you about to start a stage FRONT SIGHT, Front Sight, Front sight !

Good luck

Shooting IDPA was about the most fun I had with my clothes on.

Make sure you don't use single stack/8rd mags as this will eat you up on time on some stages. I switched to my High Power the next time & my score skyrocketed.

It's a lot of fun & everyone is most helpful.

this is correct about the scores going up if you are not very quick with mag changes.

Shoot what you have.

I shoot a single stack P220 .45. I carry it, so its is what I shoot matches with. My mag changes have gotten much faster. I will never win a match with it but I have won my category before.

Take your carry piece and have a ball.  All the advice given is good.  I have been shooting IDPA for about four years now and it's fun.  I don't sweat the scores too much.  I'm more concerned with accuracy and safety.  My goal is to get in some practice in a stressful CQB situation, using the weapon I'll most likely have in my hand in a real shoot-out.

I think you will enjoy yourself.  Good lessons to be learned in IDPA matches.

IDPA is a lot of fun. Decide what you want from it-at some point. Personally, I use it as a training tool. If I wanted a game I'd shoot IPSC or Nintendo. (jab at IPSC'ers;)).

Seriously, go and have fun. Don't worry about being competitive. I always have a good time at matches, they're usually filled with good people.

And let us know how it goes!

Start SLOW for your first match.  As above, slow and safe is the best way to start.  Beginners who start slow and safe earn immediate respect.  Beginners who start fast and miss a lot will have a hard road to hoe.  With that said ALL the IDPA clubs I have visited (4 years, 4 states)are beginner friendly.  Bring what you carry, it will be fine. Have fun!

Hey Bob, I have been involved in IDPA since the beggining. I am a Match Director, Safety Officer and a Safety Officer Instructor. A well designed Course of Fire will have everybody reloading or nobody reloading. Good COFs have everybodycompeting on a level basis. I just returned from being a Chief Safety Officer at the IDPA Nationals. The courses were fantastic!

Well, yes, everyone did change mags. However with an 8 rounder in my H&K I had to change twice instead of only once. Oh, well.  >gg<

I did fine in my catagory but I wanted the overall top score for rookies!!!!! I may be back again this Sat.

Well, since this topic resurfaced...
I actually did go, and the guys in the club were great, really made me feel at home.
I managed to come in second on the first course of fire, and dead last on the second course of fire.  I think I would have done better on the second one had my front site not fallen off.
I will deffinately be back for more, as this was a blast.
