For Pete's sake get to the ER!  If you go into anaphalactic (sp) shock, you are screwed.
5/9/2007 5:00:13 PM EDT
[#2]
Hell.. Call a ambulance to be safe. If you are allergic you don't have much time. I would hate to find that out now.
5/9/2007 5:00:37 PM EDT
[#3]
EMERGENCY ROOM ASAP. If you're alergic to them this could be fatal. Seriously, don't take any chances.

This was the third time in two years I hit a yellow jacket nest with the lawnmower. had to leave it sitting down there running cause I can't get near it. Easily was stung thirty to fifty times. Face, ears, arms, through my shirt, head, legs are covered in welts, they swarmed my ass. There are so many you can't even seperate them. Last two times I got sick but had no severe reaction, not feeling too good right now. Am soaking them in apple cider vinegar and taking aspirin. I hate those damn things.

Dude - any swelling of tongue, etc call 911 immediately.  Otherwise, get some Benadryl & consider talking about an Epinephrine pen with your MD.
5/9/2007 5:00:53 PM EDT
[#5]
Take a shitload of benadryl now.

ETA Holy shit beaten by one second
5/9/2007 5:01:31 PM EDT
[#6]
Umm...yeah.  Have someone drive you to the ER, pronto.  If no one is avail, dial 911.
5/9/2007 5:01:38 PM EDT
[#7]
I did that last year while mowing with a tractor and a bush hog.  For some reason they could not discern between me and the machine and I did not get stung at all.  They swarmed the bush hog mostly.

Hope you feel better soon.  I hate those bastards.
5/9/2007 5:01:38 PM EDT
[#8]
this is no time to say first dibs on guns....fuckin get ahold of some medics now!
5/9/2007 5:02:32 PM EDT
[#9]
Ya' know, there are documented cases of beekeepers, who get stung zillions of times over a lifetime, finally getting stung once and going into anaphylactic shock and dieing.

Just food for thought...
5/9/2007 5:02:43 PM EDT
[#10]
Please go to the Emergency Room just in case.  Next time burn their nest!  I hope you get better soon but heed our advice please.
5/9/2007 5:02:51 PM EDT
[#11]
Is now the time??? Can I have your guns?
5/9/2007 5:03:10 PM EDT

If you have health insurance, and you know that you MIGHT have a bad reaction, just call the damn ambulance!!!

5/9/2007 5:04:02 PM EDT
[#13]
We're going to have to make a Darwin's Award thread for those here that die because they would rather ask us about medical advice than go to the damn doctor.

AXL, no joke man get to the ER now.  That is a lot of stings and could be fatal.  Be sure to post pix when you get back!

ETA:

I found this in this Article Link:

Most people can take repeated stings by bees or related insects of the order Hymenoptera with no worse effects than local pain and brief swelling. But some become increasingly more sensitive after successive stings, to the point of a severe, body-wide allergic reaction or even death.

Eh... just go soak in Robitusson, you'll be fine.

Then he can be known as the first guy to give ARFCOM a play by play as he buys the farm.

An internet legend...

That's far more satisfying than just gointg to the ER.

I'm not going to fucking die. Not over that anyway. Wife is watching me, comes by every few and pokes me and makes sure I'm not drooling or my eyes have rolled back. This has happened before. Hurts like hell but I'll get over it. She's mixing me a shot of JD and water. That always helps.

As a medic, and based on the number and location of stings, I am insisting you call 911 or go to the ER immediately.  If you have an Epi-Pen, use it now.  Do not wait.

Nope, not going anywhere but down there and burn those fuckers out later. Its gonna look like a F4 napalm run on a NVA bunker complex when I get through. This has happened before. He's ok now.

Well, since you refuse to go to the ER...

Feel the front of your Adam's Apple. Yeah, the pointy part. Now trace your finger straight down the middle of your throat about an inch to a diamond shaped indentation about half the size of your fingertip. That is the chricothyroid membrane.

Now collect up a mirror, a razor or sharp knife, and a stiff tube of some sort.

When you can't breath anymore, you need to clmly collect up all of your gear and cut into the membrane, insert the tube and get someone to blow into it for...there is someone else there with you, right?

Okay toughguy, make a choice. You ain't in Cambodia anymore and you ain't 19y/o either.

eta page two and POST PICS!

I was just about to suggest some napalm.

Repeated exposure without serious side effects/allergic response are NOT a guarantee of it not happening... in fact, repeated exposure is what causes allergic response/hypersensitivity to develop.

Go to the ER.
5/9/2007 5:24:07 PM EDT
[#30]
Are you itching?  If you are, your having a allergic reaction as it is caused by the release of histamines.  I went into anaphylactic shock when I was 7 from farking Yellow Jackets, I didn't feel very good at first and started to itch, then it came on REAL QUICK.  I just barely made it to the hospital in time, I couldn't breath when I got into the hospital then within 10 seconds of the epinephrine shot it was over.

I'd go to the ER if I were you especially since you have been stung so many times, if they find you are having a reaction they will give you a shot of steroids and antihistimines to stop it cold.

A word to the wise, anaphylactic shock doesn't always come on right away, it could come on much later like while one is sleeping which one would be pretty much screwed.
5/9/2007 5:25:15 PM EDT
[#31]
If he was going to have an anaphylactic reaction, he would have already had one.
Still a good idea to take some Benadryl.
5/9/2007 5:28:57 PM EDT
[#32]
On another note, getting the opportunity to burn out a yellow jacket nest is one of the most uniquely satisfying things one can do.
5/9/2007 5:32:29 PM EDT
[#33]
Those things are wicked.

Recon your yard and find the nests. They all go in at night.

Go to the Dollar Store and buy all the rubbing alcohol you can find.

At night, go out to the holes where they nest and open the alcohol. Invert the bottle and allow the alcohol to drain in while plugging the hole to the nest. Leave the bottle there overnight.

They'll all be dead.

Then go fill in the holes with dirt.

Not necessarily. Probably right with stings but I have seen some pretty severe reactions that developed overnight.

Zoot's probably right, "MOST" cases of anaphylaxis are within 15 minutes of exposure - however, my FDNY brother is also correct in the fact that in rare cases the response can occur or worsen hours later.  This is why I must reiterate that you speak to your MD about a scrip for an Epi-pen.

Is he dead yet?

Epi pens are a FANTASTIC idea for ANYONE. A BOB essential.

+1 on the benadryl

Keep an eye on yourself, again any swelling and call 911 asap. You may want to still go to the ER just in the rare case you develop something in the next few hours.

I am a red tag reciepent. Last time I was stung I took 2 benadryl and was out cold in under 15 min. I woke up staring at a medic with a epi pen in hand waiting on my reaction to the smelling ovule he had just crushed under my nose. Not to cool. You sir still need to take a few benadryl just to be on the safe side. If nothing else you will get a good nights sleep.

If you are in fact alergic you need to contact your DR and get a epi pen just in case. Make sure your wife and loved ones know what to do with it in the event you have another encounter and things go south very quickly.

Alchol may make you feel better but if you are in fact having an alergic reaction it may aid in killing you. Also do not drink after taking benadryl it will cancel its effect out.

Be safe and hope you listen to some of the wise advice in your own thread.

Anaphylactic scock is no fun...better be safe than sorry when it comes to your throat swelling up and you not being able to breathe any more.

I find that a stream of brake cleaner directed into the hole will knock out any wasps trying to get out. A lit match flicked in the general direction (from a distance) is one of the most soul-satisfying experiences on this earth.
