I didn't find it amusing at all when it was first posted, and I still don't. And I've made my feelings on the matter unmistakably clear on several venues.
This guy took a deer illegally, in a scenario that could have very easily gone way beyond bad. But he got lucky and he got away with it so everyone thinks it's "cool!"
Baiting and killing cats is sociopathic behavior, I don't give a shit what your justifications are.
I build and shoot black powder cannons and mortars. Safety and responsibility are big issues, guns over 3/4" bore are dangerous weapons.
Even a fast ignition is slow compared to a modern firearm, And there's no stopping once it's initiated. Projectiles (especially mortar shot) can take a long time to reach their destination. Things downrange can change drastically in that time.
Shooting these guns was never "safe" back then, it was hazardous duty. Crews could be killed by their own gun. And they still demand respect today.
And I cringe at some of what passes for "artillery" today. But I have to keep my mouth shut as not to offend, nobody wants to hear how their new eBay gun is an open-ended pipe bomb.
And FWIW, that highly praised Mountain Howitzer looks nice, but the design is as fucked up as a football bat and fails in several key areas. It's a rolling checklist of NSSA violations.
I like doing this. I want to be able to keep doing it, and to teach it to another generation.
Fucksticks like "Buckstix" threaten that by their sheer stupidity.
Sorry for the rant, but this thread has angered the babcat . . .
