I recently started smoking cigars again after a 4 year hiatus. The humidifiers I have are worn out and frankly speaking never worked all that well. Below is my humidor that I made nearly 10 years ago. Since I made it, I want to use it but need a better way to not only control but measure the humidity level. Thats where I hope you guys can help.

Any suggestions for humidifiers and hygrometers for this size humidor?

I can help but it will cost you a bit of room in the humidor.

1) go to a florist and get a block of WET oasis foam

2) go to a pharmacist and have them order a pint of propoline glycol

3) when you get the propoline glycom mix it 50/50 with water

4) Cut the oasis to fit a small container with room all around it –– make sure the container fits inside your humidor

5) pout 50/50 mix onto the oasis and soak it completely

6) put in humidor and close the lid. When oasis gets dry, add more 50/50 mix.

The mix will maintain a 70% humidity just fine

Heartfelt beads is a good surefire way to go.  I've got the big tube in my glass top and a pound in one of their mesh bags in the coolerdor.   Just add a little distiller water  until most of the beads turn from white to clear.  The beads take and give humidity to keep your humidor at the humidity you choose.  If it starts turning white showing it needs rehydrating.   Just place a shot glass with distilled water next to it check after a few hours remove when most beads are clear.  You can also just take it out and add water.    In my opinion they are idiot proof.  Check them out at heartfeltindustries.com

eta:   They have several size and shapes to pick from to minimize space taken.  Along with allowing your humidor to look it's best.

Hahahaha go go coolerdore.  I love having a display humidor to keep the 'fun' sticks in, I use the coolerdore for long term aging and storage.

does aging do much to a cigar? i mean is it like fine wine and always gets better? if so, how?

I life in Los angeles and it gets pretty hot and dry here. but with a cooler that i keep in my basement with the beads, my sticks don't get hot and they don't dry out.  I put water on the beads some time in may (i'm pretty new to storing my own cigars) and even with out a thermometer or humidity meter everything is just fine.  I just look over the beads to see if they are mostly clear.

Absolutely.

I've never ran into a cigar which didn't get better with age.  I try to give my 'aging' ones at least a year, especially ISOM's.
