I'm one of those in the country where I can't get anything but dial-up.

Is HughesNet worth the $400.00 installation then $59/$69/$79 monthly plans?

Anyone using it? Is it worth the money?

My sister has had it for a few years and likes it ok.  I use the euro version of it here in Iraq, but it's $520 a month, makes the rates there look great huh?    There is a lot of lag, and the Fair Access Policy (FAP) sucks, but its leaps and bounds better than dialup.  You might want to check with cellular providers if you have coverage where you are, they are faster.

I use it frequently and pay ~$60/month.

It's OK, make sure you have a good installer. It beats dialup by a LOOONG way.

Take time to become knowledgeable and you will enjoy it a lot more.

Before signing up, see if you can get a broadband connection via cellphone. Verizon and Sprint are among the best. It works well in a lot of out of the way places.

If you have a phone line, consider Hughes "ONE WAY" It uses the phone line as the return link and is a lot faster than 2Way. I have it too.

Hughes won't know what you are talking about if you ask them about it because they want to sell 2way, but one way is $39/month and the equipment is readily available on eBay and cheap. Antenna pointing is very easy compared to 2way.

One-way is the best bang for the buck [and faster, I typically see 1.5 Mbits per sec down]and I use it in preference to 2way [600 to 1meg bits down] when a phone line is available.

I move around a lot...
