It seems like you have a time limit on possible damage done.   Hopefully you're not so stupid and willfully ignorant to assert that because no damage as been done, that no damage can or will be done.

You're not that stupid, are you?

In point of fact I have been a bit under the weather lately and as a result I am not my usual jovial self.

My interest here is in squashing the "my tax money paid for that classification system" argument before we hit page 2 because it is a laughably fallacious distraction and unbecoming of someone sporting a tank.

I don't recall anyone thinking that people were going to die because some Chinese hackers suddenly had a pile of personal information.

They are most likely to use that data to find people to exploit as spies to get classified data about US military hardware so they can make more shit that looks just like our shit, while claiming it is their own new and improved shit.

surely the leaks were so massively, mind blowingly damaging that anyone could see the effects? Public assassination of identified spies etc.

to me it seems that the leaks hurt the federal governments credibility with its citizens far more than any individual service member.

Assessments made on the subject are 90 percent assumption and 10 percent observed enemy action.  Bottom line for me, had the government not been trying to find a way to intentionally fuck over Americans liberties I would be defending them.  Instead they chose poorly, and therfore fuck them and everything they own.  Prioritize citizens over .gov and all my ducks magically appear again. Til then...

Nope, I really really do not care. The people who care the most are the ones whose job and credibility was hurt by the leaks. And that's a good thing, on the list of actual tangible threats to safety, governments with such secret programs and lists have caused millions of victims. I'd take exposing the NSA over being protected from some secret effects that will affect me but I won't know it. Ridiculous

Maybe the government could start weeding out some of those refugee programs if they really want to do something for national security.

The butthurt Gov.bot crew assured us that Snowden's revelations were crippling and damaging in ways that our tiny civilian brains could barely comprehend. National Security! America might finish the game with less Civ Points! Badder than bad, we were told, this was going to be WORSE!

So, it's fair to ask, a year and a half on, what's actually worse for the US? (Referring to the spied upon, not the spy-ers.) What American has been materially harmed in the past 18 months because of what Snowden revealed?

If someone died from the leak of classified information.. that would be public knowledge?

If no death is measurable as a result yet there is no damage?

So it's bad (and "edgy") to be happy the NSA spying was exposed, because someone might have died from it, but we don't know because its a secret. Am I following that right?

It certainly does not look good for Snowden that he fled to Russia, no doubt about that.  Do we know that he provided them with additional information?  If he did, I cannot imagine how anyone could support that.

Sure, they have other stuff to do. On paper, at least, more important stuff. Though the nature of that other stuff isn't as important as they'd like for everyone to think. But that's another thread.

And sure, folks are going to equate them with creepy guys who hang out at parks and stare at playing kids. That's sort of the consequence of becoming the domestic surveillance branch of the US government.

Oh, don't be speechless. I heap as much scorn at the equally 'modestly usefull' (to be polite) CIA as I do at the NSA.

American intelligence agencies, be they targeted domestically or internationally, are GREAT at spending money in hard to track ways, but have a pretty abysmal record at actually helping the US be prepared for coming events. So cries about damage to said agencies are kind of pointless, other than to protect the bureaucracy for bureaucracies sake.

And sure, folks are going to equate them with creepy guys who hang out at parks and stare at playing kids. That's sort of the consequence of becoming the domestic surveillance branch of the US government.

There haven't been any earthquake fatalities in the USA since 2003, so I believe the NSA has been protecting us from earthquakes. We will know now if an earthquake happens in the future, that it was due to Edward Snowden
