Depends on how many tax tickets the city wants to write. Its on just long enough that no matter how fast you go when you first see it, it will turn red just as you stick your nose into the intersection, leaving you with a millisecond to decide whether you want to keep flying, or slam on your breaks, causing the guy behind you (who was also trying to beat the light) to rear-end the shit out of you. |

Depends on how much the city/county wants to make with the red-light camera. Albuquerque actually got caught making the yellows shorter at intersections with red light cameras, then lying about the duration of the yellows when somebody had gone out and collected video evidence. Then another mayor was elected and the state told Albuquerque that it didn't have the authority to put the things on state roads, shutting down its biggest money maker. Then the program was nixed. Now, we're back to yellows that I actually have the time to make the decision of whether or not to stop, and then act on it without running red lights. |
It depends on whether or not that intersection has Traffic Cameras or not! In Brick, NJ, Traffic Cameras were recently added to two intersections (the most highly trafficked intersections in Brick.) There were VERY FEW accidents at these intersections historically, so the purported premise that they were installed for safety is B.S! Immediately after their installation, the timing of the YELLOW lights were shortened SO DRASTICALLY, that it made it necessary to either slam on your brakes if approaching the intersection as it turned yellow, OR press on the accelerator to avoid getting a PICTURE-TICKET in the mail... @ $165.00! Now, at any day of the week, you can see those strobes popping away, like a Van Halen concert Light Show, pulling in OVER $250,000/MONTH! Do the math: That's 50 tickets per day, or 2 per hour on average... PER INTERSECTION! If you want to experience CORRUPTION on a grand scale, in every arena of local/state/federal Government, COME TO NEW JERSEY... but LEAVE YOUR GUNS BEHIND YOU!

| I swear at a couple of heavy traffic intersections here the yellow left turn is super long if traffic is still passing over the sensor and there is a delay before the green through traffic. Here you are expected to enter the intersection on a green and wait for an opening to make your left unless its a red left arrow. Then 2 more cars are behind you waiting to tail through the light if the first car pulls out far enough. |

Adjustable.
Third party red light camera operators HAVE BEEN CAUGHT shortenng yellow durations to durations that do not meet legal guidelines, to increase revenue. But hey, it's all about safety, yo. Don't let any of those tin foil wearing naysayers tell you different. |

A medium sized city near me installed traffic light cameras about ten years ago to jack up the tax revenue.
The traffic light cams would take a picture of your license plate and you would be mailed a ticket if you ran a red light. When they first installed the cams, there was a rash of accidents caused by people slamming on their fucking brakes the instant a light turned yellow, even if they had plenty of time to get through the intersection before it turned red. This caused many epic rear-endings from the tail gaters behind them who were not expecting them to lock up the brakes. The situation was actually kind of hilarious, and at one point the mayor's office had to issue statements to the media telling people to please calm the fuck down, as they would not get tickets unless they entered the intersection after the light had turned red.

Speaking of those traffic light ticket cameras, I had one malfunction on me once.
Passed through an intersection on a solid GREEN light, and saw the camera strobe of the ticket camera flash in my rear view mirror as it took a picture of my license plate. I was like .
Called the police on my cel to tell them what happened and they said don't worry about it, they were aware it was malfunctioning. Never got a ticket. |
