Well my little safe is full, and I too wanted my carbine up front, the stock is too short to use the "holders" for lack of a better word, so I put a small foam base on the floor of the safe and it fits like a regular rifle.

In order to have my carbine up front, I put a wooden dowel in the barrel that rests in the safe's slots. Takes no time to remove and you don't have to modify anything if you decide you want longer arms up front for whatever reason. Just an idea.

I don't own any guns...[rolleyes] but if I did I'd have alot of them in a too small(20 gun) safe and the taller ones go in the back. The scoped ones sit on their butts and the unscoped ones get stood on their muzzles in between the others. Carbines in the front just propped in against the others. Handguns crammed into the top shelf. It's always..errr it would be a pain to get to what ever you wanted but they all fit and are..errr would be secure and fire proofed...[:D] edited to add...buy the biggest safe you can afford....even if you can't afford it...you'll be glad you did...later. I will if I ever get any guns..

Probably best to have the butt-end resting on the floor for stability's sake. I'd do something like Woodworth does or you could fabricate a small set of slots and attach them lower in the safe. |

i only have one in my safe and it's pointed out with one end of a string tied to the trigger and the end tied to the door.[bd]

You guys need to put some socks on those guns so they don't get dinged and nicked when moving them around or taking them out or putting them in. My wife went to Wal-Mart and bought some fabric for $2, then got some elastic for $1 and made me 10 socks that my biggest gun (Mcmillian 300 Win Mag) will fit in. It's nice not having to worry one might fall and scratch another, those things are damn expensive..PROTECT THEM. [:D]

You can get rubber/plastic coating at home depot and you coat the rod one or two coats leaving the threads exposed that you put through the wood (5/4 pine),mark out your holes and use a counter bore bit so you can recess the hole so you can put a nut on the front and the back so that the nuts are even with the surface of the wood. I used those felt furniture pads that you put on the bottom of chairs to hide the nuts and to protect the ends of the barrels. There is no sag even with the colt Kodiak 44 mag on the right side of the picture. The rubber/plastic coating really works and will not allow the inside of the barrel to be scratched. You know I was wondering if I mounted something like this on the floor of the safe if I could store Rifles like this and increase the amount of Rifles I could store in there? Make a cardboard tube to slip on the end of the barrel to extend it and prop it in the rack. You can make one from cereal box cardboard and scotch tape. No need to take it off in an emergency. That's how Martha Stewart does it. But she uses decorations on the cardboard. It's a good thing.

Me thinks Ken Mays wins the blue ribbon!!!!! I just bought a Browning Whitetail Standard today at Gander Mountain. It was originally $999.00, marked down to $899.00. Then I noticed that some goober scratched the door jamb by trying to shut the door with the bolts extended. So, another $100.00 off. I sampled the green touch up paint at the store, you can't even see the marks. Dicks had a similar Remington safe for sale for $699.00. The fit/finish of the Remington didn't compare with the Browning. The interior wasn't as nice either. I have a small safe for my handguns, but have been feeling increasingly uneasy about my rifles occupying the corners of the rooms. Not real bright on my part.......

Basically I decided that instead of paying megabucks for two or three safes, it made more sense to fortify the door and wall leading into the room. That way you just lock the door behind you on the way out.
Of course this may not work for some folks. The details of exactly how I did it I will leave as an exercise to the reader. Hint: lots of steel. |
