Who do I talk to to pitch my idea? Are there proper channels to go through?
Needs to support lots of transactions and items. I might be open to some partners if you prove yourself to be valuable. It's gonna be like ebay, but different... |

Guys, forget the primates for a second.
Are there actual people I can pitch this idea to or is it still an area where you are better to go at it alone? |

I've only made it part way through that thread. I've been tossing around the idea of importing some junk from China to sell on Ebay, probably put up a website when I do. |

View Quote Yes there are people you can pitch the idea to, or you can get investors (post above yours) or go "alone" if you wish as well. All dependent on complexities and $ available. |

Do your self a favor...NO fucking partners. Tough it out on your own. You will be happier later. Your welcome. Send check later.

View Quote I think it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how big you need to be on day 1. Ebay didn't start out as big as it is now. What can you get by with to get up and running? A thoroughly vetted business plan should be your first step, not building a website.

View Quote I've heard that from almost everybody in every line of work. Even a guy I used to work for said partnerships suck, and then when I branched out on my own he asked me later if I wanted to partner up with him. I said fuck no, you can keep helping me for money and I will keep helping you when you need it, someone has to be the boss at every job. |

Unless the idea generates a lot of money searching hard for the right partner is your best bet |

I would also advise against partners. Do you need investors or programmers? Without knowing more details which I understand why you won't share it's hard to give advice.

I'll be an investor, but I want stock options.
Dead serious, I got like 40 bucks in my paypal account just burning a hole. |
|
Kickstarter. I'll throw in $50 and a bunch of bananas.
If you promise to have sloths as well, that'll be another $50. |
|
Sorry, dude, but I already parked www.e-monkey.com and all the associated URL's.
Tagging for info for my own website plans. |

I would need to be paid up front. No way would I work for another site that will "make it big" only to end up busting my ass and receiving nothing when it fails.

OP is full of lies and elderberries. There is never a monkey.

Careful with the monkeys.
Monkeys throw wrenches. Do this: 1. Business plan 2. Marketing / can I make any money? plan 3. Business processes (a big flow chart on a white board) 4. Web site processes (a big flow chart on a white board) <-- here is where you need programmer help / someone that's built an e-commerce site before 5. Build web site back end / fund the parts 6. Build front end. 7. Roll out. You can do 1-3 on your own. If you can't, you won't be able to run this anyway. I take it you are young? Pretty much every hair-brained idea was tried in 2000 - 2004 time frame. "eBay like" will run into patent problems, and lots of competitors for niche markets you may think are empty because, well those businesses suck and the market in that niche sucks so you haven't heard of it. Good luck. For every "two guys and a server build empire" story there's a thousand of unfortunate suckers that went back to their old job stories.

<--- Web developer. Overbooked at the moment, but I may be able to point you in the right direction if you'd like to discuss it. Feel free to PM me if you like.

Your question is too vague. How much business are you expecting? How big is the market?
I'd recommend that you look into something like a WordPress site with e-commerce capability. To make something from scratch is expensive and since you don't have any revenue and monkeys steal shit anyway, I'd start smaller and ramp up when you need to. Are they monkeys or chimps? There IS a difference. |
|
I've seen ads for a couple of different companies that will build a site for next to nothing. What about godaddy?

It's the implementation that's a bitch. Or let me put it another way - those of us with the skills to build a site... do you really think we just sit around all day thinking "Damn. I learned how to build these website thingies, and can't think of a damned thing to do. I wish someone would come by and tell me what to build, so I can do all the work and give them half!"? |
|
I can help with the design aspect - but if you need functionality similar to ebay you are going to need a custom programmer.

Your idea isn't an ugly lump of metal welded to a dust cover, is it?

Fuck that I've seen what can happen with Monkeys
|

Will need more details about the monkey potential before committing.

First, if your idea is that great, don't tell ANYBODY unless you have them sign a non disclosure agreement. If you tell your family, ensure that they don't go around telling people.
Write your idea down and stick it in a lock box. |
