http://www.politico.com/story/2013/03/how-white-house-quieted-gun-control-groups-88546.html

An interesting story from Politico.  A few points I thought many members here would find interesting:

1.  Apparently after our national conversation on guns led by Biden in which they at least pretended to be interested in the opinions of the NRA, NSSF, etc., the President has been having regular meetings with gun control groups and allowing them input on policy.

2.  In return, the gun control groups have pledged to keep silent about the meetings and allow the President to control the message and campaigning behind recent attempts.  The one group that would not play along (VPC) essentially got cut out of the process.  This ban on going off message not only effects the groups but extends to individual Congress members as well (Carolyn McCarthy being an example).

3.  Registration (background checks with all sales records retained) is the prime goal of the Administration and these groups. This may explain why Schumer recently filed a background check bill in the Senate that even NRA F-rated Mark Kirk would not sponsor.

Oh... gun CONTROL groups.  For a minute I was really pissed.  Okay, I'm awake now.

It sounds like they are concerned about their image. I would be too if my name was tossed around in the same camp as the irrational gun "control" folks. This could go either way. On the one hand it would be good for the public to know the true will of the banner politicians. On the other hand maybe the little public pressure to further bans will die off if it's kept out of the MSM spotlight

This is typical of how O runs things.  Play ball with me or you don't get to be on the team.

The only issue is that this is not really a fight he wants to have now.  He did NOT get a mandate in the election.  He does NOT have a majority of people on the dole yet that he can use to strong arm into supporting his agenda.  He CANNOT count on the Union types to support him "en mass" on this as there are a LOT of gun supporters in their ranks.

So, he herds a bunch of organizations who have lost their main stream relevancy into a coalition following his lead.  This allows him to keep them in line and not force him into losing positions while he "does the best he can" against the EVIL NRA and Republicans.

Which is turning into very little because of our efforts and others.

Darn....I almost feel bad for them.  O is going to screw them again by accomplishing nothing. (Or very little)

It's a smart move on his part.  By getting the irrational, totally psychotic bullshit out of the media stream, it allows them to stop riling up Mr. and Mrs. Mainstream America.  Once they have sat back down on the couch, they will act, and quickly.  We have to KEEP the message going and keep it visible!

Zero is going for the 2014 mid-terms so it makes sense for him to tell the more rabid gun control jerks to cool their jets. They have gone full retard and now there is a back-lash. Look at what is starting to happen in CO.

If he wins the House in '14 then it's Caty bar the door and nothing will be too outrageous to pass. This is a case where the over used term Chess vs Checkers really has teeth.

My take is that they are silent because they believe Obama truly shares their goals.  They are letting OFA focus-group test different messages in an effort to isolate the NRA from most gun owners.  "See how the extreme NRA opposes reasonable efforts like background checks on all sales?". If they succeed with that line, it is on to phase II - banning the smaller groups of gun owners under various pretenses to reduce the overall number.  Defeat in detail.

I think Obama is taking control of the message because he knows all too well from his own experience how to downplay the crazy shit your allies have said and done in the past and claim you just want to be "reasonable.". Of course, even Obama can't pull that off if his allies are yelling "Take all their guns and shoot their dog!" at the same time.

this is the answer.

they are "gunning for", and will win, the 2014 midterms. and when they do we'll all be forced to make some choices we never thought we'd have to.

I think that is pretty defeatist.  There are seven Dem Senators who are up for reelection in strong pro-gun states and the Dems need +20 to win the House.  Obama won his 2012 election by concentrating in the swing counties where he needed to be. That strategy won't help him win the House or the Senate.

Either way, we have to pull out all the stops.  If Obama is willing to try bans and registration NOW before 2014; the amount of gun control waiting for us with a Dem House, Senate and Presidency is going to put us on the Australia path...

If it weren't for the gun control issue, he might have had a chance in 2014.  Blaming the GOP on the shitty economy, while a lie, was gaining traction with the uneducated masses.  He should have listened to Bill Clinton, "Don't piss off the gun owners....."
