| Trying to figure out if I should buy more mags for my M1A, got 4 now. What's the consensus on a good number of magazines for a range fun gun? What say the hive? 87? |

10 per always seemed good to me, although I'll admit that I have a hell of lot more than that for my ARs. Some folks have ridiculous quantities of mags, banking on profiting when a mag ban passes. That just seems like bad karma to me, but whatever.
Of course, if a Federal ban passes like the ones in NY or CA, your big stash of larger cap mags isn't going to be worth squat. Many will say it could never happen. They are wrong. |

For my M1a, I used to have a 1950s BAR belt with each of the 3 cells on each side carrying 2 magazines. That's 13. And I had another 35 or so mags tucked away. This was for a single rifle that nothing else took the same mags. You can never have too many mags. And you won't regret it. You can, however, have too few. And you WILL regret that. |

During the AWB, I happily paid $90.00 EACH for 15 round Glock 19 magazines. Buy one a paycheck for a while. Buy some in bulk if you see a good deal. Don't wait until a potential panic moment, or, if politics should turn against us, until a ban is looming. |
| 10 for each gun is a good starting point. Mags are wear items, meant to be expendable, and can be lost or destroyed depending on when or how they're dropped from the gun. Buy enough to cover future need in the event another ban is enacted and you can't get replacements. |

I guess it depends on what you are going for, how much you shoot that gun, how you treat your gear, and how durable the mags are. The size of your ammo fort will change things, too.
10 to 15 was my starting point for the AR. I'd like to have double that, plus a few rebuild kits. I own fewer of the AICS mags, due to the cost. Even the polymer fuckers are over $30 each. I need to get a few more of them, and try to track down some sort of rebuild kit. I need some 10/22 mags, too. If you're gentle on your gear, get a rebuild kit for a few of your mags. At least you can extend the life of your range mags, and keep the other half of your mags for replacement duty when something inevitably bends, breaks, or just wears the fuck out. |

To answer your question, in a literal sense, 1 magazine. This is the bare minimum that you should have.
Basic rule of thumb for ARFCOM GD standards is to have 10 magazines per firearm at minimum. Most people here have a shit ton more than that. But TBH most people you see/meet at the range have well below 10 magazines per firearm and are content with 1-2.
