Trying to figure out if I should buy more mags for my M1A, got 4 now. What's the consensus on a good number of magazines for a range fun gun? What say the hive? 87?

The number you're looking for is MOAR.

Minimum for me, for a range gun, is 6.

If I ever think I might want to use it for SHTF, the answer is ALL of them.

10 per weapon.   If you have multiple weapons of same type, no more than 30 per group. Best you can get.

A minimum of 11 for me. One magazine in the rifle and ten spares, at 200 extra rnds (for M1a) or 300 spare rounds for 30 rnd mags.

Answer this - Can you see your floor?

Yes - buy more magazines

No - you might have enough magazines

Load up all of your mags for that rifle. Can you carry them? You need moar if so. Once you have all you can carry, you need to add as many as you could possibly expend in a fixed position.

Definitely can still see my floor.... so more is the answer I guess then.  Figure I'll shoot for that 10 as a starting point.

I think is a good start.  Doesn't hurt to stash a few away either.

Why no more than 30?

10 per always seemed good to me, although I'll admit that I have a hell of lot more than that for my ARs.  Some folks have ridiculous quantities of mags, banking on profiting when a mag ban passes.  That just seems like bad karma to me, but whatever.

Of course, if a Federal ban passes like the ones in NY or CA, your big stash of larger cap mags isn't going to be worth squat.  Many will say it could never happen.  They are wrong.

If you have loose ammo, buy more mags.

If you have empty mags, buy more ammo.

Repeat as funds allow.

If you have kids, or plan to have kids, you need to buy for them too.  Always be looking for a sale and pick up mags.

For my M1a, I used to have a 1950s BAR belt with each of the 3 cells on each side carrying 2 magazines.  That's 13.

And I had another 35 or so mags tucked away.  This was for a single rifle that nothing else took the same mags.

You can never have too many mags.   And you won't regret it.

You can, however, have too few.  And you WILL regret that.

Let me help you out with some personal experience.

During the AWB, I happily paid $90.00 EACH for 15 round Glock 19 magazines.

Buy one a paycheck for a while.  Buy some in bulk if you see a good deal.  Don't wait until a potential panic moment, or, if politics should turn against

us, until a ban is looming.

My rule of thumb is 20 mags per gun but more is always better.

13 is a good number. I keep one in my ar, keep 6 loaded in a maxpedition bag in my trunk and leave 6 in like new condition. I'm still on the first 7 after leaving them loaded for years at a time and there hasn't been any issues yet.

ymmv and all that.

Loadout for an M14 is typically 7 mags. Double that (14) would be my suggestion for a minimum.

10 for each gun is a good starting point.  Mags are wear items, meant to be expendable, and can be lost or destroyed depending on when or how they're dropped from the gun.  Buy enough to cover future need in the event another ban is enacted and you can't get replacements.

I guess it depends on what you are going for, how much you shoot that gun, how you treat your gear, and how durable the mags are. The size of your ammo fort will change things, too.

10 to 15 was my starting point for the AR. I'd like to have double that, plus a few rebuild kits.

I own fewer of the AICS mags, due to the cost. Even the polymer fuckers are over $30 each. I need to get a few more of them, and try to track down some sort of rebuild kit. I need some 10/22 mags, too.

If you're gentle on your gear, get a rebuild kit for a few of your mags. At least you can extend the life of your range mags, and keep the other half of your mags for replacement duty when something inevitably bends, breaks, or just wears the fuck out.

[#46]
I'm up to 40 for my two ARs.

I also collect vintage web gear (Vietnam and earlier), so any time I get a new mag pouch, I get this urge to fill it with new mags.

Always keep buying mags. And unless you're keeping them in the wrapper to sell at some point,  load them.

There is nothing more useless than an empty magazine.

I have ammo cans full of loaded magazines. Just because I want them.

[#48]
To answer your question, in a literal sense, 1 magazine. This is the bare minimum that you should have.

Basic rule of thumb for ARFCOM GD standards is to have 10 magazines per firearm at minimum.  Most people here have a shit ton more than that. But TBH most people you see/meet at the range have well below 10 magazines per firearm and are content with 1-2.
5/18/2016 2:56:58 AM EDT

You need a minimum of 25 per rifle
