A whiny adult is far worse, than whiny kids.

Sit down, wait for service, look around.  If you don't like what you see, walk away.  If you are stupid, stay and deal with the bullshit.

My three kids behave because I don’t ignore them and we actually talk over dinner. Still, we often get the stink eye when being seated because people expect uncouth behavior as the norm. And we get seated in some far corner when the kids are with us. So it happens enough to be a pattern.

Middle of the road fancy. Not jacket and tie, not waffle buffet either.

My standard response is to turn on the loudest, raunchiest porn i can quickly find and make eye contact until the point is made.

Unfortunately, even high end places arent immune to be invaded by screaming pet sperm. I usually try to eat at places where kids simply arent allowed. Cigar and whiskey bars are usually where I end up.

High prices, dress code, and limited or no children's menu.

I've been to plenty of high class restaurants and children have never been a problem.

My 6yo has been to many upscale restaurants since he was 3 months old. Never had cause a scene or acted out. He enjoys raw oysters, steak, salmon, and shrimp.

if he ever acted up that would be the end of it. But we bring him everywhere we go and he does just fine. Many of the fine dining establishments employees want to see him more than us. It hurts our feelings when we have a sitter and go out.

I cannot stand screaming children in a restaurant setting. A couple of years ago my wife and I went to a Denny's in the afternoon and as soon as we were seated the waitress brought a family with two screaming ass kids and sat them right behind me. I look at my wife and she already knows the drill, lol. We get up simultaneously and head to the door. We ate at a nice little Italian place instead.

I have and (usually) they are OK. But sometimes the turd parents get through. And perhaps I shouldn't have said "high class."

I remember a time at a steak house when I sat across from a group, a man, woman and 2 kids 7-8 years old. They were VERY well-behaved, and on the way out I mentioned to the mother "These kids displayed the nicest restaurant manners I've seen in a long time! You should be proud of them!" I made her evening! She beamed and acted like I'd handed her a winning lottery ticket.

Too often these kids' manners are lacking though. And denying entry to the kids in today's society is asking for a lawsuit.

Usually, price will keep out both children AND the type of parents that let children run around like untamed animals.

Beyond that, local rules prohibit anyone under 21 in places that allow indoor smoking, so usually pool halls, cigar bars, and similar.

High end “Greek style” paintings maybe?

Someone in the room hasn't studied Greek culture beyond the 6th grade.

The Greeks accepted ALL SORTS of sexuality. Herculese, for example, had a male companion throughout his adventures; you needn't even read between the lines. And as for their gods... just look up Leda and the Swan.

Skull fucked his wife, obviously. It'd be an absolute bitch move to do nothing at that point.

Or Europa and the bull. Or Danaë and the golden shower.

Zeus really got about, Greek nightlife must have been wild. How many Greek girls banged stray farmyard animals in the hope that they were Zeus in disguise?

High-class children go to high-class restaurants. I expect that Op has never been to such an establishment. The children of the hoi polloi are often little better then street urchins.

This. I can't remember the last time there were annoying kids, or even kids at all in a restaurant that was a quality establishment. But I typically eat later and if it's a quality place its more than likely not going to have a kids menu anyway.

If there was a problem and it wasn't resolved quickly I'd definitely let my server or the manager know.

Don't let them in?

It seems that if you post a restaurant policy of No Children you draw the hate of the public. A couple of years back there was a bar (nyc I think) that prohibited strollers. A bar!  So the parents parked the strollers on the sidewalk and brought the kids in.
So a safer way is to not offer kiddie amenities, no playground, no kids meals, no high chairs.

When I lived in Las Vegas I would frequent restaurants with these policies but they would not enforce them. Families showed up in shorts and tee shirts and obnoxious kids. These restaurants were expensive ($2-300 for dinner for two).  The tourists come spending plenty of money on vacation so the restaurants let them in. I wouldn’t return to those restaurants.

I've worked a couple places where the F&B manager has asked people to leave if their children can't behave.  $150-$300 for dinner/drinks for two kind of places.

It is hilarious to contrast this thread with the "Don't prohibit kids from riding along on motorcycles!" thread also on the front page. That thread is filled with DTOM, "freedom be scary, yo!" chest thumpers. Yet here we have grown adults whining because someone else is using their freedom.

Pick a side and have the integrity to stick with it.

My parents regularly took me to some of the finest restaurants from a very early age, with the understanding that I would be sitting in a cold dark car if I acted up. As such it was never an issue.

Eta: The chef would frequently want to meet the 5yr old that ordered fois gras, and I knew being good generally meant a tour of the kitchen. I was allowed to read or draw before food hit the table, but once it did I was expected to participate in conversation. No eating of bread before appetizers, and if I ordered a single Shirley temple it could not be finished before the entree. This was before digital devices replaced parenting.

It's already been covered a few times, but I rarely see kids at a true high end restaurant where a meal is $100+ per person.   Where I live we have a lot of snowbirds and I have seen them bring kids to a nice steakhouse, but the kids were well behaved.

We need more parents willing to discipline their kids....when I was a kid it made no difference how nice the restaurant was....I got drug out of all types of establishments to get my ass beat in the parking lot.

I knew I had one warning and it was "the look" from dad....I knew that look well, it meant stop what your doing now or sitting down is going to be less comfortable in short order.

No kids menu isn't the solution.  The trash folks will come in anyway with their kids toting McDonald's Happy Meals.
