I am going to be living out of a hotel room for about a month. I am planning on bringing several electronics, including my laptop, Roku and/or Apple TV box, wireless router, maybe even a DVD player. Only the laptop has the famous Kensington k-slot, and I have a Kensington cable lock for it. Does anyone have a recommended way to secure the other devices in the hotel room? I REALLY don't want to have to take it all apart every time I leave the room for a month. I have thought about this: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000J4DV ![]() I have no idea how well the adhesive works. Any better ideas? ETA: I am also bringing a portable HDD w/ movies on it, in case the hotel's internet is too slow to stream movies on the Roku and/or Apple TV. |

Other "add a k-slot" options considered (some with negative ratings): http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001IXULC http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0085J2BEG http://smile.amazon.com/Kensington-SECURITY-SLOT-ADAPTER-Security/dp/B00A2VKJHQ http://smile.amazon.com/Kensington-Plate-Anchor-Cable-Computer/dp/B001Z7SKVI Or, this security bag designed to protect backpacks (though the holes may be too big for a Roku or Apple TV): http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FGVFP8 ![]() |
| I wouldn't leave your laptop in your room for privacy reasons. I wouldn't worry about the other shit unless you are staying at a crack den. Don't put stuff in drawers or in a bag leave it out in the open so it is really obvious if it is missing. I spend a lot of time in motels maybe 150+ days a year and don't have problems. |

With regard to the laptop, I figure the cable or in-room safe, plus my active subscription to Lojack for Laptops (with persistent / BIOS level protection) ought to be enough. I CANNOT take it with me during the day for what I am going to be doing. Absolute Software, the owner of Lojack for Laptops, claims a 70% recovery rate. Also, my desktop at home is my primary computer, and the laptop was purchased for less than $400 a couple of years ago, so I think I will be fine. |

I use a cable K-slot type system with a cable all the time in the US and South America. Never had an issue. What I do is keep my laptop in my backpack or laptop bag. I wrap the cable around the bed or desk or some furniture, locking it into the laptop in the bag/backpack. Then I have a small luggage style combo lock to close the backpack around the cable with all my other electronics.
My issue is never the help. While I've had them steal cash before, I've never had them steal more than that. Don't leave cash in pockets, or anywhere when you leave your room. The usual theft problem is that they leave the rooms completely open and unobserved for minutes at a time while cleaning. Actual thieves take the opportunity to grab and run. But, if it looks like it will take a couple minutes to take the item, they don't bother as the risk is too high. Locking it up in some fashion prevents that, even if the "3rd party thief" is really a friend of the "help" in the hotel. It is much tougher explaining a laptop tied down with a metal cable to furniture to their employer vs. just someone grabbed it from the desk and ran. I have a portable hard drive, it has a security k-slot. I only bother with that for longer term hotel stays where I want to leave it out with my media box(WD tv live, roku etc). I use stick-on cable mounts for any that do not have the K-slot adapter. Longer term, I.e. weeks/months not days, I've left them setup with a cable through the desk/table supports connected to the K-slots while left in a usable state, so a month long stay, it is better than nothing. My biggest annoyances/losses, luckily only in other countries, while travelling has been pickpockets. They'll unzip/slice open your bag walking down the street and take your shit without you noticing. And the tons of people watching it won't say a god damn word until it is too late. Of course all of this is multi-day stays. I tend to try to request something like extra towels and tip well right away for any long term stays. For one or two night stays, I don't leave anything in the hotel. Getting on the help's good side goes a long way. |
| I live in hotels 2/3rds of the year. As a rule I don't leave things out, but I'm not overly concerned with theft. The do not disturb sign is posted and I usually schedule service with the front desk every 4-5 days. The quality of the hotel determines your security precautions. If you wanted to secure something put it in a pelican case and cable lock to furniture. I have a large pelican trunk that I lug around, I'll secure valuables with a lock. I usually stay in 3-4 star places so room theft is not an issue to me. But, I never leave valuables in my truck and I've got limo tint on the rear windows to make it impossible to peek in. |
