Great read. That’s crazy.

Also it’s hilarious in the divine will of military history, that it would happen to a 2LT. Butterbars lololol

Osipoff fought on Guadalcanal and Bougainville, accepted the surrender of Kurihama Naval Base, Japan, which got him mentioned by name on the front page of the New York Times, and was director of Marine Corps Intelligence 1946-1948.  Retired as Colonel, passed away in 2003 at age 85.

John R McCants flew Bull Halsey's PB2Y3 for 3,000 hours during WWII, carrying VIP's including Eleanor Roosevelt and had a barracks named for him on Naval Air Station North Island, retired 1950.

All I could find about Lowrey is that he retired in 1947.

I was watching weekend warriors doing touch and go landings once.  One of the aviators deployed his drag chute accidentally. He managed to handle it

Just watched Fandango for the first time since about 1987.

Now THAT was a malfunction recovery...and holy shit whoever flew that Cessna was a maniac.

What's the difference between golf and skydiving?

Golfers go WHACK!, FUCK! Skydivers go FUCK! WHACK!

Incredible story, but why'd they go back up to 3000' over the water ?

Why not drop right down to the deck so if he falls he's only going 50' ?

A 50' drop at 100 mph impact into anything including water isn't much more survivable than 3,000' at 100 mph, especially with existing head injuries.  There's a lot of wind shear at coastlines, which would be disastrous, I suppose they climbed until they found calm air at that altitude.

It would have been vertical and taken by some guy waving the camera around and yelling the whole time.

several reasons:

1)Higher altitude means more time to react to emergency situations. i.e. the two plane collide.

2)Smother air at higher altitude. i.e. Less likely that the planes do collide.

3) More time to deploy the reserve chute if he had finally gotten free and on his own

That's fucking amazing. Every time I read about the things accomplished by people in impossible conditions, my faith in humanity is restored. I really wish we could hear similar stories from the German and Japanese side during the war. I bet they saw some interesting stuff.
