I was at a local store and noticed they had a Garmin etrex Venture on clearance for $85.00.  Is this a good unit?  I don't know much about GPS, and have never used one.  The other units they had were a Garmin etrex (no name, yellow case) for $119, and the Garmin etrx Legend for $249.  Like I said, I know almost nothing about GPS, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you,

Garmin is my choice for GPS, I own 2.

That sounds like a good price, if they still give you warrantee.

If you've got the money... get a GPS V.

GPS's are slick, but the GPS V by Garmin has built in road maps. You can get turn by turn directions to anytihng. IF you tell me your street address(for example), i could punch it into my GPS and it will tell me the directions to your house turn by turn. With accuracy withing 7 feet. I love it. It wasn't cheap, but it's more than paid itself off.

The Venture is a very good unit that is actually a step up from the yellow case model which is the basic eTrex.

$85 is a very good deal.

first you should decide what you want the gps for. Do you want address routing for driving directions? downloadble maps?

i bought an emap when they first came out. Hated it. Didn't do what i thought it should do. . Returned it and a year later i got a gps V. Best money i have ever spent.

Without routing capability they are fine for offroad navigation but suck ass for city driving.

I have two.  One is a basic yellow garmin E-trex and the other is the magellan meridian platinum.  Get the best one you can afford.  Both Garman and magellen make fine products.  Go to WWW.geocaching.com for all the info you could ask for about the GPS.  Its like asking AR-15 questions here.[:)]
