So I got a call from a friend saying a guy at work inherited some ammo from his now passed FIL. The guy says its "7.62". So I tell my friend I am interested and to give me a call this morning when he can get me more info. I get a call at 7am and the shell is brass and the projectile is silver with a black ring. The headstamp says "TH 762 S 158".
Does anyone know what this stuff is? Or what it is worth? I have a feeling it is 30-06 but I suppose it could be .308 as well. I know nothing about the headstamp stuff. Any help would be awesome. |

French version of the US.30cal M2 Alt cartridge. Made in France up to the 1960s, both Militarily (four position headstamp) and commercially. Made in Brass and Lacquered Steel. Very corrosive Berdan primers, heavily crimped in pockets. ( steel cases hardly crimped at all).

This stuff was French military ammunition intended for use by troops issued with the M1 Garands we gave to the French as aid. They usually foisted those rifles off on foreign units; French Union forces generally did not use the M1 Garand (the Carbine is another story).
French primers do not age well and it is very likely that most of them are duds now. |

Odds are most of the rounds won't fire anyway. |

The powder should be okay as well; it's just the primers that go bad. |

In a bolt action, sure... Just clean with water based whatever shortly thereafter. All it is is salt, nothing more sinister than that. |
