I know this probably isn't the right time to be asking this but I am at my wits end. Does anyone know what to do/give an eight month old baby for a sore throat and congestion? My son has what the doctor said is "something in between RSV and asthma". So he is really wheezy and coughing a lot so his throat is sore. He also has an ear infection. He is on an antibiotic for the ear infection. He is also taking a steroid and inhaler for the wheezing but the doctor never gave him a cough med. So I really don't know what to do. He is really hard to put to sleep and when he does go to sleep he only stays asleep for a few hours. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Remember he is only eight months old so anything with honey in it is out. Thanks in advance. |
Really? I thought it was because it contained a lot of allergens from all the pollen...but I guess that's just something I was told by a non-MD. |
yep it is botulism poisoning. That is what his doctor told me and I have read it in a lot of different baby books. |
Oh. I had no idea. I always thought honey was the perfect food because it was pure & clean. Learn something new every day. (I mentioned this to my wife and she said the same thing you did "you can't honey to a baby, are you crazy" ) ![]() Good luck. I hope he starts to feel better. (might help to keep him away from dad's hat.....)

While honey kills bacteria, it can also harbor funguses (all right, FUNGI. Geeez.) These are bad for babies. I think 18 months is the earliest you should give honey to a baby. MrsSubnetMask, in my admittedly limited child caring experience, I learned that wheezy kids can be helped if you let them sleep face-down on your lap. This helps them drain, and they are safe if you are holding them. |
Oh and by the way it is 2 years old before you can give a kid honey. |

He can have Motrin now since he's over 6 months, so alternate that with Tylenol. Every 3 hours he should be getting something. Get a cool mist humidifier for his room.... and maybe one of those Vicks vapor machines. You put little Vicks pads in there and it warms them to release the vapors in the room. And I know this sounds weird, but rub his feet with Vicks and then put socks on him. Coughs are the worst. Without a really good PRESCRIPTION cough suppressant/expectorant/etc, there's not much to do for them. Thank your lucky stars it't NOT RSV.... our oldest was hospitalized for that when she was little. Hope he gets better soon. |

You might try letting baby Subnet sleep in his car seat. It props him up and helps with the draining/congestion. I would definitely call your pedetrician's office and see what over-the-counter cough suppressant or prescription med they may suggest/prescribe. Use a vaporiser to help with the draining. You are correct about honey, strawberries, nuts, etc.. These foods compromise the developing immune system of a child younger than two and can lead to allergies when older. Disclaimer: Not a doctor. Just a daddy who has spent many nights sitting up watching one of his babies breath in and out while sick/congested. |
