So after writing to my congress critters regarding the recent spate of gun legislation, I got this response back, which is full of exaggerations, emotional pleas,  and falsehoods, but I can't quite recall the proper sources for evidence that refutes many of these specious claims.

I fully intend to write back and refute his letter.
What I don't need is, "Second Amendment, enough said".   While the sentiment is technically correct, that is not enough; the falsehoods must not go unanswered.
Naturally I would reply respectfully as he did to me but with facts on my side and not trumped up stats.

Any sites, reports, links, et al that anyone can provide to refute any of the falsehoods here would be much appreciated, and since I'm fairly sure many congress critters will be using similar verbiage to their own constituents, sharing this would arm us with proper refutation and let them know we aren't stupid and aren't just buying it.

Just my own 2 here that won't go in the letter, but I for one am sick and tired of hearing about "gun" violence as though knife violence, beating/bludgeon violence, vehicular violence, and every other form of violence doesn't exist or pales by comparison when it doesn't. The issue isn't "gun" violence, it's violence, period, and it's brought on by horrible polices that hurt the family, damage the upbringing of our youth, and enable mental illness and anger to run unchecked.
Okay, so maybe some of this will go in the letter.

In one what?  One incident?  One week? He didn't even finish the sentence. Seems convenient.
He just spouts a slew of bloated stats and doesn't actually back up any of it with links or sources.
692 "mass" shootings in one year?  Just no. This needs to be set straight.


Here we go again.   267 in the past 6 months? We know they play with the numbers and definitions but holy cow that's disingenuous.


AR-15s aren't "automatic".  It's understood that if it isn't prefaced with "semi", it's understood to mean "fully", yes?
Also, these shooters were known to the FBI, who did nothing but could have with the laws already on the books.

I also believe his "research" to be a load of manure, but can't recall the source of refutation I saw recently. If anything, "gun" violence in ratio to the number of guns owned is down, not up.


We know the vast majority of shootings are with handguns and that his assault "weapons" fingerpointing is a red herring.
Not sure if there's a site with a breakdown though.
(Also AR-15s are not used on the battlefield, I would chalk it up to firearm ignorance but I suspect he knows and claims it anyway)
The comment about large capacity magazines is pure tripe, unless he's talking about 100 rnd drums, and even then with a SEMI auto that'd be a feat.

The premise is broken, driving is not a constitutional right. Firearms are explicitly protected by the Constitution, as the right to freedom from tyranny and self defense cannot be violated.  This trumps personal transportation.


Except they don't. He doesn't apply the concept of "regulation" equally to these points, and also again none of them are enumerated in the Constitution. Apples and Oranges.  The term here "well regulated" doesn't mean the guns are to be regulated.

No offense.. but sending a response to his cookie cutter letter is not going to do anything. You're farting into a hurricane.

Instead.. Post the letter on facebook and twitter, and with short concise sentences, debunk the emotional BS talking points with real facts.

And the easiest fact is... No one advocating for gun control, plans on turning in their guns. Just yours. If gun control works.. you first. If you aren't willing to go first, then that is the end of your argument.

Just link them to Colion Noir or some other YouTuber who debunks all this drivel for a living. The senator won’t read your response, or believe anything you say. They HATE people like you and me.

I will say Mo Brooks had a good response to the message I sent him. I think he must be a member here.

You're probably right,  but I just feel like if constituents don't write back and say "I know this isn't true" then they get away with it harder, maybe even begin to believe their own BS.

Evil people aren't moved by good arguments. God damn I wish people would wake up to that fact. These people aren't misinformed, they're agenda-driven.

Post the letter, and refute on social media for CONSTITUENTS to see.
Educate the public... and let them know where their senator stands.

Which senator is this?

- Law-abiding gun owners outnumber criminals who use guns to commit murder more than 100,000 to 1. (Gun control only limits the freedom of law-abiding citizens.)
- A CDC commission reported that an estimated 300,000 to 1 million crimes are stopped by good people with guns. (Good people with guns stop bad people with guns.)
- Mass shootings are almost always perpetrated by mentally ill psychopaths or gang members. (Focus on the real problem.)
- Cell phone use (distracted driving) results in more deaths than mass shootings. (Both cell phones and guns are tools, sometimes used for bad, mostly used for good.)
- The odds of being killed in a mass shooting are statistically insignificant. ("If it saves just one child" ignores the real threats to children.)

Gun control is an emotional agenda driven by a false narrative.

The "common sense" is that the constitution irrelevant to them. They certainly can't stomach a historical analysis of what was said about it, nor the relative contextual meaning & use of the terms in the 2-A.

This is about what they want. Nothing else. Nobody cares about tyranny or having arms to stop it. Hell, the slaver party is engaging in tyranny right now, & it's adherents are applauding them for it. They want it. Freedom? Pfffft.

The only true legal recourse to repealing the 2-A would ve to go through the amendment process. But that takes a long time, & 3/4 of the states must sign on to it, which isn't in the cards. So instead, they simply ignore it & get away with it because all of govt & a lot of people let them.

Since 2/3 of "gun violence" deaths are suicides, why don't they focus on actual solutions like suicide prevention, access to mental health care, stop promoting gender fluidity where people do really stupid shit to their bodies and later regret it, etc?

I also think it would help if the "gun safety" movement actually promoted gun safety like sponsored firearms handling seminars, CCW classes, etc...

It's true, that a well crafted letter  from a constituent will probably have little impact. What might have impact is 10,000 letters from constituents. The effort put into changing one man's mind is best spent convincing others to speak theirs. The quality of the message is less important as it will likely never be actually heard.
