I'm watching Les Stroud do it on this show (not Survivorman), and I don't think I could do it.

This is the fish that can kill you if not prepared correctly. I saw a program once where they described how the toxin works and the progression toward death. Nope.

Those who have eaten it - why?

Those who haven't - would you?

Not a chance. Not worth the possible outcomes.

I had pufferfish sushi pre-deployment. It was rather good.

Yes I knew it could kill me if it was prepped wrong, I did not give a fuck

From what I understand a small amount of the toxin will create an amphetamine-like rush, so it's kind of like getting high.

I was in Japan 10 yrs ago visiting my son A Marine.  I said I wanted to try it.   He said he could not do it because the Marines said no.  So I missed my chance

I had an exquisite, multi-course fugu dinner in Osaka back in 1998.

I'm still here.

After a gaggle of vodka tonics, I'd blow a line of puffer fish.

I had it twice in Japan about a decade apart.  The first time it was a wild fish and it was dangerous.  I was young and bulletproof.   They acquire the poison from things they eat in their environment and farm-raised ones are not poisonous; so there was no danger the 2nd time.

I would eat wild fugu in Japan as the standards are very strict there, but I wouldn't eat it anywhere else.   I would eat farm raised fugu anywhere.

A similar concept here is eating wild mushrooms.   If you know what you're doing its completely safe, if you haven't a clue you wind up eating deathcap mushrooms in your salad and dying.

Yep.  Had Stonefish too. Great presentation, kind of bland.  No tingle.  I'll take fatty tuna/salmon or good hamachi over them any day.

I'm a diver and they are cute as hell so I don't really want to eat one.

Pigs are ugly as fuck,  this is why bacon is so good.

I want to try fugu. I love sushi/sashimi and have always been curious.

I'm willing to bet Les Stroud was okay because not all pufferfish are poisonous.
