Hashima Island is an uninhabited island in Japan several miles from Nagasaki.
It was used up until 1974 by the Japanese for coal mining. The population of the island was over 5,000 at one point and included apartment buildings to house the workers and their families. Eventually Japan shifted from the use of coal and the island was abandoned and fell into disuse. It was featured in one episode of Life After People to show how modern structures decay. Last year, Google mapped the island with a "Street View" backpack which allows you to search around and through the decaying structures on the island. Enjoy. https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&authuser=0&q=hashima+island&aq=&vps=2&jsv=471b&sll=32.627833,129.738588&sspn=0.00675,0.009645&vpsrc=0&ie=UTF8&ct=clnk&cd=1&spell=1 Click "Street View" and explore. |
| I've seen pictures of that before. It's so bizzare, they way they abandoned that island. It's almost as though they told everybody that had 10 minutes to pack up their personal belongings and leave. I recall pictures in which there are TV sets, books, school desks, slot machines, you name it and it was left behind. |
