When writing in pinyin, can you use the numbers to represent the tones and still be understood in writing, rather than using the accent marks, as in, can "Hànyǔ Pīnyīn" be written as "han4yu3 pin1yin1?"

Most of the time I see the tone numbers being used, since standard American keyboards don't have the right accent marks for the other way.  Probably only a few Euro layouts have all of the accent marks (German doesn't, for one), so everybody just uses numbers to make it easy. . . .
