"absolutely stunning"
Is it really, though?
Hail fucks up metal cars, asphalt roofing, etc. You thought glass solar panels were immune?

Large enough hail will do that.

I've thought about building a rollout tarp to cover mine. On the other hand, panels aren't that expensive so I could just replace them if they get to large of hail.

God gave us plenty of coal, oil, and gas = just use those.

Depending on solar is dumb.

Locals are very worried about water contamination.

Experts said that most of the time, large solar farm panels are made of compound cadmium telluride.

This is something Kaminski is worried about because he uses well water.

“That’s what we take a shower with, we drink with,” Kaminski explained. “It could be in our water now.”

That’s a design feature. That way the company can sell you new panels every two years. Kinda makes the math on the 17 year payoff not work out but it’s ok.

Cadmium is recognized as a toxic substance by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which set a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for cadmium (Cd) of 0.005 mgL-1 in drinking water. Tellurium (Te), while not regulated by the EPA, has also been shown to have the potential to cause kidney, heart, skin, lung, and gastrointestinal system damage in rats and in humans

I thought I read there was a "farm" in either Iowa or Nebraska that would point the backside up if storms were predicted.

They learned their lesson once before after a $1.5m fuckup.

Insurance companies have been cancelling policies for some of these "farms".

I live about 20 miles east of that solar farm. I never knew it existed. They got really hammered by the the recent storm. Fortunately, I didn't receive any hail at all. I could use a new roof in a few years though.

They get expensive fast when you are talking about utility grade fields of panels. Some of the fields in Texas are a million panels.

We have solar but not as our main source of electricity. We have it as a back up because where we live, outages are quite common and can last a couple days. Also, we can bank power, meaning in the summer we are selling back to the elec company and only pay the $39 fee. Then when winter comes, our bills are half what everyone else is paying.

I will say that where we live, which is quite rural, there are a lot of people whose only choice is solar.

I didn't say they have the same vulnerabilities.  Nuke plants do go offline, sometimes spectacularly.  Coal trains derail, hydro turbines fry bearings, whatever - they're all susceptible to something.

I'm not anti-nuke, btw.  Or anti-gas, coal, wind or solar.  I think we should continue to develop them all as long as they're viable.  Because none of them are perfect and never will be.
