| I'm bluing the bolt on my Mosin i broke it down to the main 3 pieces and i cleaned it then laid a coat on it as smoothly and as evenly as i could and then let it sit for 10 minutes then cleaned it off using oil, but it looks like a fucking 2 year old did it its all splotchy and streaky, do i just need to lay down more coats? should i let that coat sit over night then recoat? Is there a trick I'm missing here? |

Yeah –– cold blue is for touch-up and will never look that good. Also it affords nearly zero corrosion protection and is for cosmetic purposes only.
Also, follow the directions. Most say to rinse with COLD water and dry before oiling. I've had the best luck warming the part up, then continually rubbing fresh bluing solution onto the part until it gets as dark as I want (they're not really "coats"), then rinsing in cold water, then heating to dry it, then oiling it. ETA –– yes, it also has to be degreased and oil-free before the blue will take. If you want it to match the rest of the gun you're going to have to have it hot blued. |
